Fiddler On The Roof is a story about love and laughter, devotion and defiance...and changing tradition Wynton Marsalis To Present Young Audiences Master Artist Workshop Young Audiences and Show man Inc. are proud to present world- renowned musician Wynton Marsalis in a Master Artist Workshop for as piring local young musicians. The workshop will be held April 10 from 12:00PM 2:00PM at the Aladdin Theatre, 3116 SE 11 th Avenue. As a member o f the Young audiences N atio n al A dvisory C om m ittee, Wynton Marsalis shares in Young Audiences’ mission to establish the arts as an essential part o f every child’s education. Since 1990. prom inent artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Isaac Stem, Bobby McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma have appeared in Master Artist Series programs presented by Young Audiences chapters across the country. The young musicians attending the Master Artist Work shop proudly represent some o f the finest young talent from schools and music programs across our region, also in attendance will be David Monet, a Portland area trumpet-build er that supplies Marsalis with his one-of-a-kind instruments. Wynton Marsalis, known for inspiring a youthful renaissance of America’s greatest musical tradition by bringing young players to the fore front o f jazz, appears in Portland with an outstanding new trio. The trio features Eric Reed on piano, Ali Muhammad Jackson Jr. on drums and Reuben R. Rogers on bass. All have performed with outstanding professional in the field ofjazz. On a regular basis, Marsalis continues to work with students o f all ages and interests. Marsal is has attained world prominence as both a musician and a spokesman for the arts in education; most recently in Time magazine as one o f America’s most promising leaders age 40 and under. As Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has helped establish a standard o f excellence in jazz presentation. His continual effect on the course of heightened jazz awareness and as a positive role model for young peo ple, place Wynton Marsalis among the very finest artists performing to day. As a benefit to Young Audienc es, a limited number o f tickets are being made available to the Wynton Marsalis concert on April 9. The performance will begin at 7:PM on the stage of the PCPA. Civic Audito rium For only $50, Young Audience patrons attending the concert will enjoy choice concert seating, a pri vate reception, entry in a special draw ing and admission to the following days’ Master Artist Workshop with Wynton Marsalis. Young audiences is a national non-profit organization with 34 chap ters nationwide. Portland will be host for the 25th Annual National Young Audiences Conference, April 27 - 30, 1995. The theme for the confer ence will be Advocacy: Arts for Ev ery Kid. Young Audiences of Ore gon serves the entire state of Oregon as well as Southwest Washington. This past October, the organization received the National Medal of Arts from president Clinton, The only arts organization in the country ever to do so. Division Street, Steve Tesich's hilarious look at a group o f ’60s radicals trying to survive the '80s, runs through April 15 at Portland Center Stage in the Intermediate Theatre o f the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. Artistic Director Elizabeth Hud dle stages the production, with sce nic design by Michael Ganio, cos tumes by Rose Pederson, lighting by Rick Paulsen and sound by David Maltby. The cast includes several faces familiarto Portland audiencesas well as actors new to the company. In the role of Chris, onetime leader o f the Movement, now trying to lead a quiet life as a Chicago insurance under writer, is Don Scorby of Portland, an actor with local film and television as well as theatre roles to his credit. Playing Betty, a female cop who used to be a man, is Gregory Donavon, who has appeared with Portland com panies including Imago, Portland Repertory Theatre and Portland Black Repertory. Division Street injects still-rele vant social commentary even as it lampoons political as well as sexual foibles among this diverse cast of character.
