to fight diabetes at "A Celebration o f
Gospel,” held recently in Los Ange
les. Proceeds from the concert w ill
benefit the American Diabetes Asso
ciation’s (A D A ) African American
Outreach Program and the Black
C hurch Diabetes Education Program.
Blue Cross o f California was
honored at the event for its sponsor
ship of the Black Church Diabetes
Education Program. The program
coordinates efforts with 200 church
es throughout Los Angeles, targeting
50,000 members. The goal o f the
program is to create an awareness
about the problem o f diabetes among
African Americans as a community
health issue that affects everyone.

personally touched by diabetes. They
graciously agreed to help us by per

cause o f death by disease among
African Americans. Twice as many
cases o f the disease surface in mem
bers o f this ethnic group than in their
white counterparts o f the saine age"?
Beyond age 65, there are nearly three
times as many cases o f diabetes in
blacks as in whites, with the majority
o f cases affecting women.

recently received a $20,000 grant
from the C ollins Foundation.

ate new space for the center and pay
for computers and internet access.

books and periodicals from all over
the world and eventually to become
a clearinghouse o f written materials
and videos to respond to local and
regional needs for the study o f re li
