T o draw attention to som e o f the housing discrim ination problem s in our region, several typical cases are available for m em bers o f the m edia to exam ine and feature if de sired. O ne story a w eek for the m onth w ould provide several instances o f discrim ination on the basis o f race, ethnicity, fam ily status, o r sexual orientation. Such a series could also provide inform ation on the regions' enforce- ing. zoning and citing regulations, litigation, and the Com m unity R ein vestm ent Act. Participation o f property m anag ers. housing advocates, consumers, real estate licensees, lenders, and govern ment em ployees is anticipated. Fair housing is a key issue in the diversity and liveability o f our co m m unity. K afoury said the proposal re sponds to a critical shortage o f affordable housing for w orking fam ilies, as w ell as the need to accom m odate expected growth. “ W e know how to produce housing and w e know that we need to do it to strengthen all our neigh borhoods. W hat we d o n 't have is the funding to do w hat we know we need to d o," K afoury said. “ W e c a n ’t d epend on the federal go v ernm ent o r the private sector.
