He has spent almost his whole life in state foster care, and is now one o f approximately 180 Oregon children awaiting adoptive families. If you are ready to make a permanent commitment to a child through adop tion, please read on! Like many o f the youngsters in need o f adoptive parents. Jay had a rough start in life. Born to a mother who was unable to meet his needs, Jay lived briefly with a relative, and then entered the foster care system. He has received excellent care from a medically trained foster mom. and has overcame the early effects o f prenatal drug exposure. Jay is now ready for a family o f his own. Jay is a healthy boy who enjoys music, drawing, being read to, and playing outdoors. He is shy until he gets to know a person. When he feels secure and happy. Jay has a wonder ful smile! Jay has good coordination and muscle control. He enjoys play ing with mechanical toys such as Legos, and shows advanced ability with them. Jay is behind other chil dren his age in his language skills, and he receives speech therapy to Churches Rally To Support Inner-City Programs Facing likely cuts in govern ment funding for programs serving the inner city, churches in North and Northeast Portland are rallying to support the social action mission o f the Albina Ministerial Alliance A c c o rd in g to R ev. H enry Greenidge, pastor o f the Irvington Covenant Church, more than 15 in ner-city pastors have designated March as “AMA Unity Month.” “Many members o f our congre- g a tio n s a re s tr u g g lin g ,” said Greenidge. “ Some o f them have re ceived help from the Alliance. Sixty percent o f PA groups are in the tri-county metro area, with additional groups in the counties o f Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Deschutes, Marion. We are serving approximately 900 families per year. All PA direct services are provided by volunteers. In addition to our support groups, we provide a statewide, toll-free 24 hour Parent helpline which is totally staffed by volunteers. Rev Greenidge noted that the participating churches represented a collective m em bershipofover 3,500 members. Participating pastors have des ignated one Sunday in March as “AMA Unity Sunday” . Pastors will use the pulpit to inform their congre gations about the A lliance's mission and to build financial support among their congregations. Churches may participate by tak ing an "AMA Unity Offering" or by making a direct donation from their budget. Provide inform ation about child rearing: • Child Development (Expecta tions) • Alternatives to Corporal Pun ishment (Positive Parenting) • Ideas on building children's self-esteem • In most locations provide a program for children that is struc tured to work on self-esteem, friend ship, and confidence building. • Provide a network o f other parents to assist the parent in child care, phone contact, support and car ing. • Enable parents to take better care o f themselves so that they can take better care o f their children. • Assist parents who want to improve their parenting by provid ing models, information, and ongo ing support while learning new' child rearing techniques. • Provide support to families as they grow towards health and non violence. Women For Sobriety W omen for Sobriety, a support group for women recovering from addictions, meets every Tuesday, 5:30-6:45 p.m., at Town Hall, 3704 North Interstate, Conference Room D. One o f more than 300 groups nationwide, Town Hall Women for Sobriety utilizes a discussion format to provide support based on the pro gram 's philosophy , w hich centers on issues o f women ’ s se lf-esteem. Mem bers learn strategies to form healthy life and thinking habits. N ot a Tw elve-Step Program, WFS is a non-profit organization wh ich offers a ph i losophy o f 13 State ments, such as (#1): “ I have a life- threatening problem that once had me," and (#12): “ I am a competent woman and have much to give life.” Emphasis is on growth and on the present: Participants learn from the past, plan for tom orrow, and live today.
