Art/On The Edge Presents Rhodessa Jones Rhodessa Jones and Id ris Ackamoor, two o f San Francisco’s most provocative and exciting per formance artists, w ill present their most recent work. Big Bun Girls, Hard-Headed Women, written and performed by Jones and directed by Ackamoor, received a Bessie award and was the runaway hit o f the National Black Theatre Festival in North Carloina. Inspired by Jones' experience as an aerobics instructor in a women’ s pris on in California, the piece is dedicat ed to Regina Brown, one o f her stu dents who was murdered after being released from ja il. Jones embodies numerous characters to examine the lives o f the incarcerated women - how they got there, what it feels like to be there and how fine the line can be between being on the inside and being on the outside. Using theatre, dance, song and saxophone accom paniment by Ackamoor, Big Butt Girls. Hard-Headed Women is a strik in g ly p o w e rfu l e x p lo ra tio n o f marginalized people in American African American Artists Launch Coffee- House Exhibit A newly formed artist’ s col lective w ill be exhibiting work in a group show in the reading room o f Steen’s Coffeehouse, located at the comer o f NE M.L.K.. Jr. Boulevard and Russell. The Black Local A rtist’s Col lective (B L A C ) was the idea o f B ill Scott a northeast Portland artist who wanted to be involved in a groject that gave African American artists more exposure w ithin their own community. One mission o f the collective is to make youth in the area aware that art is a thriving industry which in one way or another touches all our lives every day. This show w ill help to demonstrate that there are indeed options. Beginning January 13,1995, the work o f the collective mem bers w ill be featured in a succes sion o f group shows through the month o f A p ril. Entrance to the exhibit w ill be through Vessels, “ Tableware w ith Meaning” lo cated at 2605 N E M.L.K.. Blvd. Exhibit hours for the month o f January w ill be from 10:00 A .M . to 6:00 P.M. Tues, through Sat. Vessels is a co-sponsor o f the exhibit. Exhibiting artists in January include: G a il C arter, Stacey Conley, Henry Frison, Athena Hampton, Janice Ingersoll, Kathy Pennington, Jerry Quenton, B ill Scott, N ell Spigner and Leslie White. Rhodessa Jones and Id ris Ackamoor are the C o-Artistic Direc tors o f Cultural Odyssey, a San Fran cisco based non-profit performing arts organization that creates and per forms m ultidisciplinary performance pieces. Their twelve year collabora tion has resulted in a number o f works, in c lu d in g “ The Legend o f L ily Overstreet’’ (1984), “ Live at Club Reality” (1985), “ I Think Its Gonna W ork Out Fine” (1989) and “ Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women” (1990). Ms. Jones is also the director and founder Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women” (1990). Ms Jones is also the director and founder o f The Medea Project, a program de signed to promote incarcerated wom en’s self-awareness and self-esteem through the creation and production o f theatre pieces. Ms. Jones has also collaborated on a number o f projects w ith her brother, dancer and chore ographer B ill T.
