( B 3^250 ‘M eth’ Lab Busted, Four Arrested ortland police said chemicals were cooking on the stove when they carried out a search warrant on a suspected m etham phetamine lab in a northeast Portland home. O fficers storm ed the home at 4329 N.E. G arfield Ave. at 5:30 a.m . last week to confirm what they believed to be an operational m etham phetam ine lab. M embers o f the police b u reau ’s drug and vice division, Oregon State Police Crime Lab and the Portland Fire Bu re a u 's H azardous M aterial Team re sponded to the home to rem ove the drug lab equipm ent and chem icals and carry out decontam ination needs. O fficers said they also seized a quan tity o f suspected m etham phetam ine at the address. A rrested at the hom e was Edith Leslie Dean, 59; Billy S. Stroud, 45; David B. Starkey. 45, and R obert Louis Dale, 36. All were lodged in the M ultnom ah County Justice C enter Jail on charges o f m anufacture and possession o f a co n trolled substance. Dean was also a rrest ed on an outstanding w arrant for parole violation. Stroud faces an additional charge o f being a felon in possession o f a firearm . P Flesh-Ripping Bullet To Hit M arket Two new hyper-destructive handgun | bullets are about to go on sale despite the objections of police and gun-control ad vocates. One is designed to do maximum damage to human tissue, the other can penetrate body armor. The inventor de fends the flesh-ripping bullets as “defen sive” for protecting citizens against at- | tackers and intruders. Simpson Favoritism Charged O J. Simpson’s treatment in the Los Angeles County Men's Central Jail is drawing complaints. Some law yers are grumbling their clients can t get the benefits Simpson’s receiving, such as unlimited visits, more frequent showers, longer sleeping times and more time to exercise, talk on the phone and watch TV. Simpson was allowed to see outsiders on Christmas, when jail-house visiting was suspended for all other inmates. Jail offi cials say any apparent favoritism is geared to the smooth operation o f the jail. Wearing protective clothing, a hazardous material team from the Portland Fire Bureau, sorts through chemicals suspected of being used to produce methamphetamine, seized from a house at 4329 N.E. Garfield Ave. Groups Recycle Christmas Trees T NAACP Demands For Change Heard Some African American leaders are | calling for nine-year NAACP Chairman William Gibson to step down for the ben efit o f the organization. Dr. C. Delores Tucker and other current and former mem bers o f the NAACP board cite a laundry list o f charges against Gibson and former | executive director Ben Chavis. Gibson has denied any wrongdoing and says he has the support o f the majority o f the 64- inember board. Police Shooting Ruled Justified A recent fatal shooting o f a robbery suspect in Milwaukie was justified, a Clackamas County grand jury has deter mined. The jury reached its decision last week after testimony from 15 witnesses. Charles Ray Burke, 20, was shot and killed by police Dec. 12 during a foot chase after allegedly stealing $80 at gun point from the owner of a southeast Port land grocery. Farrakhan Plans March On Washington Minister Louis Farrakhan is planning a million-man march on Washington slat ed for Oct. 1995. The 61-year-old leader of the Nation of Islam plans to ask all African American females, children and non-black supporters to boycott white businesses and stay home from school and work on the day of the march. Farrakhan says he wants to address the wrongs done to black people and urge them toward self- sufficiency and self-reliance. ------------------ —— 7...... .. ____ LaMar Franklin. 16. of the House of Umoja, spreads chipped Christmas trees at a northeast Portland residence as a public service to a low-income family. EDITORIAL HEALTH METRO SPORTS A2 A5 BI B2 he Sabin C om m unity Development Corp, and the House of Umoja are among non-profit groups participating in a citywide effort to recycle Christmas trees. Metro regional government is promot ing the recycling as a way to do something good for the environment while supporting community organizations and projects. In the Sabin neighborhood of inner- northeast Portland, tree chipping was being donated by the lawn care business Pro-grass. Overall there are 160 dropoffsites and pick up services in the tri-county area participat ing in the effort. Most groups will be collecting trees this weekend and on the weekend of Jan. 7-8. A small fee or donation will support the activity of groups such as the House of Umoja, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches and school organizations. Last year more than 63,000 trees were reeve led by non-profit groups becom ing com post, mulch, walking paths and decorative landscape materials instead o f landfill mate rial. “Residents of our region are great recy clers and Christmas tree recycling is a double win, said Judy Wyers, Metro Council pre siding officer. “Citizens give their trees back to nature and support many worthwhile projects at the same time.” Residents can call Metro Recycling In formation at 234-300 for specific informa tion on tree recycling options. ihe House of Umoja provides residen tial treatment for adolescent men with gang affiliation issues. Treatment includes anger management, violence prevention, interper sonal communication and problem solving skills. The food and gifts were delivered to Portland area families who were less fortunate this holiday season.
