Its doctrines are holy, its histories are true, its pre cepts are binding, and the decisions are im m utable. M ankind m ust read it to be w ise, practice it to be holy, and believe it to be safe. T he B ible teach es us how to avoid follow ing false teachers, prophets and false Gods. It is a m ap for life travelers, it is the pilgrim s staff, the p ilo t’s com pass, the so ld ier’s sword, and the Chris tia n ’s Character. Jesus C hrist Is The G rand O bject O f The Bible; it was designed for our good; and the glory o f G od is its end. Its lessons should fill our m em ory, guide our feet and rule our hearts. Jesus, w hose birthday we ob serve on the 25th o f D ecem ber, has many nam es recorded in the Books o f Isaiah, M atthew and Psalms. He used the natural— trees, lions, m ountains for strength, etc., so that the people could readily under stand. The O ld T estam ent w as w rit ten in sym bolic language, and dis coveries o f O ld W ritings served to clear the m eanings. T hese sym bols carry out the hidden m eaning o f the lessons to w hich they have been as signed, and each one o f them bears a m essage o f love and beauty. T he Bible is a sym bol o f direc tion. Jesus, descended from the house o f David, thus the nam e “ Lion O f J udah, is a literal fulfillm ent o f this. B elief in the T rinity, in the Priesthood o f our Savior, in the B eginningofthis world, in the grow th and developm ent o f all things, in the Law given by G od, H im self, to A braham , strengthened again under M oses, fulfil led by Christ and fully explained in John 3-16, is so w ondrously brought out, that any one m ay see the debths o f it if they so desire and will five sincere thought to th eir study o f the W ord, the Bible. Teaching About Islam: A Workshop Islam, with more than a billion believers, may be the fastest growing faith in the world. Still, particularly in America, it is shrouded in mystery and clouded in stereo types and misinformation. Even common textbooks con tain poorly researched articles, thus perpetuating inaccu racies about the religion. In an effort to provide K-12 educators with reliable, Portland State University’s Middle East Studies Center is sponsoring an all-day workshop entitled Teaching About Islam: A Workshop for Educators, Saturday, Jan. 28. from 9 am. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 190 o f the School o f Business Administration at PSU (631 SW Harrison). Experts on Islam will present up-to-date information on the history and practice o f this major world faith. Registration for the workshop is $15.
