T he P ortland O bserver • J anuary P age 11, 1995 B5 WE CAME FROM KINGS AND QUEENS b \ T he Egyptian royal family had its genetic roots in Nubia, the black nation just south of Egypt. The E g y p tia n pharaoh Akhenaton or Ikhana.iton was one o f the earliest monotheists (worship ping one god) in ancient history. He succeeded his fa th er, Amenhotep III, in 1379 B.C. and immediately began building a new type o f roofless temple to the Aten (sun god). The Aton was represented as the disc o f the sun. In 1374 B.C., he changed h is name fro m Amenhotep (amen means satisfied) to Akhenaton (aton means benefi cial) and left Thebes to establish a new capitol at Tellamama. He soon forbade the worship o f other gods, except he declared that Aton had replaced the Amen. This religious reform came to be known as the Amama Revolution because o f the aforementioned new capitol. Living there with his queen, N efertiti and their six daughters, he fostered a new lifestyle that led to an outpouring o f art, sculpture and liter ature which all glo rifie d Aton. Queen Katshepsut Ruled With Strength King Akhenaton Unfortunately, his beliefs were not widely accepted and after his death in 1362, his successors, King Tutankhaton (Tut), restored tradi tional religious and the Aten temples were demolished. Tutankhaton re moved the aton from his name and became Tutankhamen. Akhenaten was a complex fig ure whose historical significance is still debated. He has been character ized by some historians as being somewhat physically retarded and his mental capabilities have been called in question on occasion. He is defended by other historians who contend that his physical features have been exaggerated in contempo rary art and there is no evidence to Talking about a bad sister, her majesty the King-Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut ruled over the great c iv ilization as w ell as any man Hatshepsut was the daughter o f the Pharaoh Thutmose I. She had three brothers, two o f whom died w hile Thutmose I was still alive. A fte r the death o f her father in 1493 B.C., the third brother was named T hu tm o se II. He then m arred Hatshepsut (his sister) in order to keep the dynasty pure and strengthen his right to the throne. They ruled together for eight years before he died. Thutmose II had only one son. The child was the product o f an affair between him and one o f his concubines. A t the time o f his death the child was six years old. A lth o u g h he was p ro c la im e d Thutmose II (pharaoh), Hatshepsut ruled the land. When she became the ruler o f Hatshepsut support the charge o f mental insta bility. Sometime back, I wrote an arti cle for this paper on how rising inter est rates affect all investments such as bond funds and other income se curities etc. A t that time, I talked about how the money market managers in Ja pan, Germany and other countries were selling their bond funds and other long-term securities because o f rising interest rates. There have been several money market funds that have collapsed as a result o f this action by these money managers. I f you are investing in money market funds, you might want to think about selling your capital and investing in something that is somewhat safer because o f what is going to happen in the stock market w ithin the next few months in 1995. You should not believe just be cause the fund that you are invested is a grand total o f $1,180 b illio n dollars. This is what investors have lost in the last year. These figures should tell you why you should take your investment out o f bond funds and long-term securities. Especially the ones that are in the high risk category. I f you feel that you need to in vest, my research indicates that you should take a look at short-term trea- suries-T-Bills- they are a good in vestment. You can purchase T -B ills directly from the Treasury Depart ment, and you do not need to have a broker to do so. A ll o f this can be accomplished by making a telephone call and the purchase o f a postage stamp. You can reach the Treasury in has a big name that it is safe. This is not what counts in this situation. You should not dare to ignore this warning. I f the bond fund that you own was bought when interest rates were at there lowest point, you are probably invested in a high volatile, low liqu id ity derivatives and every time interest rates rise you are going to lose money on your investment. Interest rates rose six times in 1994, and they are going to rise several times in 1995. Let me give you a good example o f what has happened in the past year with bond funds etc. As a result o f interest rates rising, the losses are as follows: (1) Corporate bonds $250 billion, (2) M unicipal bonds $140 billion (3) Treasury securities $320 billion, and (4) Mortgage and mort gage back securities, $470 billion. What you should do now is take your calculator and total up these figures. Elizabeth Furse, D-Ore. has introduced a Constitutional amend ment to lim it the number o f terms served by members oftheU.S. House o f Representatives and U.S. Senate. Furse, a long-time supporter o f term limits, said her jo in t resolution would help open public office to more citizens. “ Oregonians support term lim its and I wanted to follow their wish- es,” Furse said. “ M y amendment would make sure that Congress is a place for public service and not for a lifetim e career.” Furse’ s proposal, which must be approved by two-thirds o f both the House and Senate, would lim it House (James B Williams is a black history and poetry teacherfrom Port land.)
