Group Wins Medal Last year, the chapter’s artists worked in 305 schools, reaching over 200 thousand children. The group has been successful in staging a benefit "Run for the Arts” each spring, raising $335,000 last year, for art programs in local schools. It also provides discount cards for children to attend and en roll in art activities. “At a time when arts education continues to be under-funded, even sacrificed in school budget cuts, it is gratifying to receive this reco g n itio n ,” said Avery Jo h n son, Young A udiences executive director. “It validates the im por tance o f what we do and it brings us a sense of accomplishment and achievement.” A National Medal of Arts award has been made to a Portland and Vancouver area arts group that has provided education and activities for area children since 1958. Young Audiences of Oregon received the medal from President Clinton on Thursday. Famed cellist and national Young Audiences board member Yo-You Ma. accepted the award on behalf of the Oregon non profit organization. Young Audiences brings the re sources of local artists together with teachers, parents andchildren through a diverse combination of in-school sessions and com m unity-w ide projects. Over the past five years, the group has reached over a million school children.
