Many professionals in the areas of health, mental health, education, law enforcement and religion are fac ing a growing challenge in the 90’s: the presence of destructive cults in society and the negative effects these cult environments arc having on those exposed to them. On Friday November 19, from 9am to 4:30pm, the Cult Center of Ecumenical Ministriesof Oregon will join with The Institute forContinuing Education of Health Care profession als of Portland Community College to sponsor a seminar on Cult Impacts and Community Responses. Out of a filed of 106 entries, 31 wercchosen tobe screened for public viewing on Sunday, No vember 7 at 3pm at The Portland Art Museum Northwest Film Center. The Cult Resource Center’s mis sion is to educate and provide re source materials to empower indi viduals to make informed decisions on abuse of potentially destructive cults. It is a new and exciting program for Ecumenical Ministriesof Oregon, an organization known for its support of religious diversity. Some cults use deception and mind control to recruit and maintain members. In the Pacific Northwest, many lives are being ad versely affected by mental, spiritual and sometimes sexual abuse. (Music/Dance cat egory) - A visually evocative music video expressing the inner feelings involved in a love relationship. • Jefferson High School JTV News Production class: JTV News, 11/92 (Feature News category) - A well-executed news magazine piece providing an upbeat forum for a variety of issues touching students’ lives, community involve ment, and classroom events. • Jefferson High School students: The Jefferson Dancers (Music/ Dance category) - The delicate bal ance between camera movement and human movement is captured by this engaging video which w eaves Jefferson dance performance pieces into a coherent and beautiful whole. This year’s festival jurors are Gigi Killen Rosenberg, an indepen dent media producer/director, and Eric Lundeen, a Portland area high school teacher with expertise in me dia production. In viewing the en tries, the jurors stated that they “at tempted to represent a balanced com parison of a wide range of age groups and adequately represent a variety of culturally diverse perspectives.” The Festival encourages young film and video makers to challenge traditional images in commercial media and as sume their own modern voices.
