Slate Representative Margaret Car te r. Co C h a ir, C itizens Against Marijuana legalization, argued that Ballot Measure 5 w ill escalate the use and abuse o f drugs "Oregon is already dubbed as heing the gateway and oppor tunity tor drugs To send this type of message further perpetuates the prob lems we have in the Slate lo t drug ac tivities " Throughout the press conference, opponents attacked Ballot Measure 5 They said the measure is "intentionally poorly u o rd e d " in order to confuse people " I f Oregonians know what it means, they w ill vote the measure down in November,'* said Stale Representative Paul Phillips Phillips, who also is co- Chuirman o f the Citizens Against Marijuana Legalization, said the Ore gon Maniuana Initiative would make it legal for anyone IK and over to grow and possess unlimited amounts of marijuana Phillips also said, "the maniuana initiative is a built in dclense for the criminals The law enforcement officers and the courts have the burden o f proof . Mike Burton said Ballot Measure 5 w ill he bad for Oiegon's business and higher educa tion. Burton said, "w hat happens when we tell Japanese businessmen, who we are trying to attract into this State, and when we say come to Oregon because we have the availability o f drugs and manjuana ’ W ho's going to hire Oregon graduates from the universities, where we have the availability o f drugs to the level it w ill be if this Measure is pas sed?"
