H '.— A fro - A m ericans have influenced music, politics and religion in Am erica. O n e aspect o f their influence is felt even in this holiday w eek. They have a h o lid a y . It is called "K w a n za a .** IN K w a n za a is a Sw ahili w ord for ••firs t fru its .** In West A fric a it is called a harvest celebration. But in Black com m unities across the coun try , K w anzaa represents a value sys tem they created in reason, tradition Benefit Concert and need. This side o f self-determ ination was adopted by M a u la n a Ron Kar- enga o f the U .S . cultural o rg an iza tion . H e felt the need to establish a tim e fo r A fro -A m e ric a n s to d ed i cate their hearts, minds and bodies to the seven principles o f Blackness BOB B A IL E Y . K w anzaa lasts seven days and each day a K w anzaa cerem ony takes place. It is a tim e to devel op a philosophy fo r the com ing year and to slow d ow n and regroup. K w anzaa is a tim e to pay tribute laughter and cerem ony. Joyce H a rris , director o f the Black E d ucational C enter said, " M o s t Black people w ill celebrate to A fro -A m e ric a n and A fric a n an cestors. A unity cup is passed Christm as. But K w anzaa is a separ ate, special h oliday fo r Black peo around and participants m ake an o ffe rin g w ith a thought. F or those dissatisfied w ith the com m ercializatio n o f C hristm as, K w anzaa represents m ore substan tial principles and com m itm ents. It provides an alternative tradition p le .” M a n y o f the symbols incorpor A lth o u g h A fro -A m e ric a n s cannot celebrate the harvesting o f an actual crop, the first fruits are the concrete works they have built and are begin ning to build as they fight fo r free dom . T h e first fruits are the changes that are beginning to take place in their minds and lives. Kw anzaa is the celebration o f survival ated in Kw anza are symbols o f the Black L ib e ra tio n M ovem ent in A m erica. T he theme colors are red, black and green. Red is fo r the blood they've shed; black is fo r the color; and green is fo r (he land. T h e symbols o f life , corn and a horn o f plenty dress the Kw anzaa table. O n each night o f K w anzaa a candle is lit to start a devotion to one o f the principles o f Blackness. Host families sought for teens which better defines A fro -A m e r icans, because it gives them the free Learn m ore about another coun try by sharing your life and home w ith an intern atio nal high school student. Y o u th Exchange Service (Y E S ) is in need o f host fam ilies all over the U n ited States fo r students d om to define and help themselves. In Los Angeles the Kw anzaa F ou n d atio n feeds 5,000 needy peo ple. T h e y also provide clothes and toys to those in the area. T h e sixth night o f K w anzaa in- aged 15 to 18 fro m d iffe re n t coun tries, com ing on homestay program s o f 3 to 9 m onths.
