O n e aspect o f their influence is felt
even in this holiday w eek. They have
a h o lid a y . It is called "K w a n za a .**

called a harvest celebration. But in
Black com m unities across the coun­
try , K w anzaa represents a value sys­
tem they created in reason, tradition

was adopted by M a u la n a Ron Kar-
enga o f the U .S . cultural o rg an iza­
tion . H e felt the need to establish a
tim e fo r A fro -A m e ric a n s to d ed i­
cate their hearts, minds and bodies
to the seven principles o f Blackness

K w anzaa lasts seven days and
each day a K w anzaa cerem ony takes
place. T h e cerem ony is not a semi­
n e m in g c e r e m o n y d u r in g t h e s e c o n d n ig h t o f
K w a n z a s h e ld a t th e B la c k E d u c a tio n a l C e n te r.

K w anzaa represents m ore substan­

provides an alternative tradition

M a n y o f the symbols incorpor
A lth o u g h A fro -A m e ric a n s cannot
celebrate the harvesting o f an actual
crop, the first fruits are the concrete
works they have built and are begin­
ning to build as they fight fo r free­
dom .
T h e first fruits are the changes
that are beginning to take place in
their minds and lives. Kw anzaa is
the celebration o f survival
ated in Kw anza are symbols o f the
Black L ib e ra tio n M ovem ent in A m ­
erica. T he theme colors are red,
black and green. Red is fo r the
blood they've shed; black is fo r the
color; and green is fo r (he land.
T h e symbols o f life , corn and a
horn o f plenty dress the Kw anzaa
table. O n each night o f K w anzaa a
candle is lit to start a devotion to
one o f the principles o f Blackness.

In Los Angeles the Kw anzaa
F ou n d atio n feeds 5,000 needy peo­
ple. T h e y also provide clothes and
toys to those in the area.
T h e sixth night o f K w anzaa in-
aged 15 to 18 fro m d iffe re n t coun­
tries, com ing on homestay program s
o f 3 to 9 m onths. Host fam ilies p ro ­
vide room and board and may re­
ceive $ 5 0 .0 0 tax deduction fo r the
