Best buys Beef liver, turkey, chicken, whole ham , g round beef and p o rk shoulder were again found to be the most economical meat buys in a sec ond study by the U.S. Department o f Agriculture. Prices in the study, which includ ed meat alternates as well as selected types and cuts o f meat, poultry and fish, were based on four consecutive weeks in June 1982 in five Washing ton, D .C ., area supermarkets. The firs t study was in the same area in February 1982. Some meat a lte rn a te s — such as dry beans and peas, peanut butter and eggs— were also good buys in protein, according to Esther W inter- feldt, adm inistrator o f U S D A ’ s H u man N utrition Inform ation Service. “ These foods also provide certain o th e r n u trie n ts fo r w hich m eat, p o u ltry and fish are valued,” W in- terfeldt said. The study compared the costs o f 20 gram s o f p ro te in — a bout one- th ird the recommended allowance fo r a young m an— fro m selected meats and alternates. USDA intends to repeat this study every year in February. “ W hile a three-ounce serving o f cooked lean beef, pork, lamb, veal, ch icke n , tu rk e y o r fis h provides about 20 grams o f protein or more, it takes well over a serving o f some alternates and meat products to get 20 grams,” she said. “ For example, it takes one and o n e -h a lf cups o f cooked dry beans, four frankfurters or 10 slices o f bacon to provide 20 grams o f protein. Tom ato plant leaves infected with aster yellow s v iru s tu rn u p rig h t and eventually curl up. Leaves in fected w ith curly top virus curl up ward, develop a leathery, s tiff con d itio n , and e v e n tu a lly the e n tire p la n t w ill become a d u ll y e llo w color. Both diseases prevent any further development o f plant fru it. These diseases are spread by leaf- hoppers and their appearance is un predictable, McNeilan explains. The diseases m ig h t in fe c t o n ly one or tw o plants in one garden, and de s tro y the e n tire to m a to patch in another garden. C o ntrol is often d iffic u lt because c o n tr o llin g the le a fhop pers th a t spread the diseases is d if f ic u lt . These viruses can also be harbored in weeds near the garden, and in other vegetable and flower plants. M cNeilan recommends good gar den s a n ita tio n as the best way to keep astor yellows and curly top out o f growing tomato plants. Remove infected plants and burn them, and keep weed growth out o f the garden. McNeilan also suggests keeping weeds away fro m the gar den where possible. Insecticides may not give good control because the leafhoppers o f ten tra n s m it the virus before they are killed. Shading the p lants som etim es helps because leafhoppers a void feeding on plants sheltered from d i rect sunlight. Safeway Quality Beef To Broil Or Barbecue 3-Lb. Coflee Maxwell House, Reg.
