Portland Observer, June 3,1982 Page 13 SOJOURNER TRUTH THEATER is com ing.. . . Shank has contributed a good part o f the repertoire, including the title tune o f their most recent release, " Z a c a .” The L. A. Four continues to tour with huge success at concerts, clubs, colleges and festivals throughout North and South America, Japan, Australia and Europe. Six albums are available on Concord, with another due soon. The Ohio native began his professional career during the big band era, joining Charlie Barnet and then Stan Kenton during the late 1940s, after studying at the University o f North Carolina. During the early 1950s, he was a highly visible part o f the West Coast jazz scene, recording and per fo rm in g w ith that group dubbed as the Herm osa Beach “ Lighthouse A ll-S tars.” A long tenurewith W orld Pacific/P acific Jazz Records pro duced 30 albums, and he turned up on dozens o f other labels with everyone from Chet Baker to Gerry M ulligan to Shelly Manne and Sergio Mendes. He has continued to win awards, since his “ new star” (Down Beat) and “ Arrival o f the year” (Metronome) honors in 1954. W ith his won groups, he has toured clubs and festivals everywhere. An enquiring musical sense has led him to collaborations with koto player Kim io Eto and India's sitar vittuoso Ravi Shankar, as well as two excep tionally well-recieved pop albums during the 1960s, “ Michelle” and “ C alif ornia D rcam in ’ . ” During the 1950s, he and Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida recorded three albums which virtually introduced bossa nova to the United States. In addition to his prowess on alto sax and flute, Shank is a warm tenor saxophonist. Somewhere in his past, rarely heard these days, are clarinet and baritone sax. His musical influences range from “ Bird, o f course, and whoever grew out o f h im ,” melded with his Latin leanings, the legacy o f his big band years, and a sound appreciation for what some choose to call “ the classics." An evening spent in his musical com pany is lik e ly to produce nods to everyone from Gabriel Faure to Phil Woods. W ith his wife Lynn, Shank is an avid sailor. Their sailboat, “ Xanalyn” (named for a Shank tune recorded with Almeida), has raced in C alifornia and H aw aii, and Shank's favorite concert dates are those near any boat basin.May ‘81 Appearing at the Vintage Reentrant & Lounge June 7, 8. &9th, tw o ehowa 7 b 10 p.m. only, w ill be Bud Shank. There arc so many aspects to Bud Shank’s musical life that it is difficult to know which o f his strengths to accent. Best known as an alto saxophon ist o f su(passing lightness and agility, he is also a flutist o f increasing re nown, a fluent composer and arranger and occasional clinician. He has been for many years the “ first call ’ ’ choice for the film and television ■studios, and it is his sound that has set the mood for countless m ajor movies. Shank currently tours both with his own group and with the L. A. f our. Linder his own leadership he is likely to appear with such outstanding colleagues as pianist Bill Mays, who wrote the title suite on Shank's recent “ Explorations: 1980“ album , and with pianist-arranger Alan Broadbent, who shares honors with Shank and Mays on the 1980 "Crystal Comments” recording. On both sets. Shank is featured on flute, in settings from stan d a rd tunes to original pieces to Bach, Ravel, Debussy and Scriabin. Soon to ;be released is a bossa nova album recorded live in Washington, D .C . with .’ the C h arlie Byrd trio . Shank also appears as flu te soloist w ith m ajor •orchestras, and has recorded works by the contemporary American com poser M artin Scot Kosins. ; Shank is also a founding member o f the L. A.
