For hundreds o f youngsters in the urban P o rtlan d com m u nity, it means learning to develop as useful citi- ien»; it means having fun while learning new skills, and It means sharing it a l l . . .the fun, the excite ment, the learning and the friend ships. 4-H stands for head, heart, hands and health. The ingredients are here, and in September o f each year a new surge o f activities emerges. Clubs develop within the schools ac cording to the interests and skills o f youngsters. Teachers add the efforts o f 4 -H volunteers to their support system, and sometimes become those extraordinary volunteer lead ers who add their love and concern for children by leading a special In terest club. Every year new clubs are estab lished along traditional lines. . .sew ing, cooking, horses, cows and N®yy ber^ysLJoydCenter Cou^oi£ ' crafts. But in the urban Northeast o f Portland, new avenues o f interest have been encouraged, and when there is an adult who cares, or a teen leader, clubs develop in k arate, knickling, (Australian folk dance), foreign languages, debate, news paper production, charm and cook ing ethnic goods. 4 -H club members are all sizes,, ages, colors, nationalities and per sonalities. They are learning to re spect one another and to share in the uniquely A m erican advantage o f equal opportunity for all to develop in personal growth. V o lu n teer leaders are v ita lly needed to continue to provide 4 -H services to the youth o f P o rtlan d. Ira D.
