What docs 4-H mean io you? For
hundreds o f youngsters in the urban
P o rtlan d com m u nity, it means
learning to develop as useful citi-
ien»; it means having fun while
learning new skills, and It means
sharing it a l l . . .the fun, the excite
ment, the learning and the friend
ships.
4-H stands for head, heart, hands
and health. The ingredients are
here, and in September o f each year
a new surge o f activities emerges.
Clubs develop within the schools ac
cording to the interests and skills o f
youngsters. Teachers add the efforts
o f 4 -H volunteers to their support
system, and sometimes become
those extraordinary volunteer lead
ers who add their love and concern
for children by leading a special In
terest club.
Every year new clubs are estab
lished along traditional lines. . .sew
ing, cooking, horses, cows and

crafts. But in the urban Northeast
o f Portland, new avenues o f interest
have been encouraged, and when
there is an adult who cares, or a teen
leader, clubs develop in k arate,
knickling, (Australian folk dance),
foreign languages, debate, news
paper production, charm and cook
ing ethnic goods.
4 -H club members are all sizes,,
ages, colors, nationalities and per
sonalities. They are learning to re
spect one another and to share in the
uniquely A m erican advantage o f
equal opportunity for all to develop
in personal growth.
V o lu n teer leaders are v ita lly
needed to continue to provide 4 -H
services to the youth o f P o rtlan d.
Ira D. M u m fo rd , extension agent,
invites anyone interested in the pro
gram to call 287-1770 for further in
fo rm atio n . The 4 -H offices in the
Northeast are located at 4815 N .E .
7th Avenue.
