Portland Observer Juna 4.1881 Paga 11 Sports Talk The Tri-County Metropol.tan Transportation District of Oregon (Tri-Met) is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Computer Graphics Hardware By Ron Sykes Sport gs Editor All proposers must certify that they are not on the Comptroller General's list In a b o ld , but not s u rp risin g move. M ayor Ivancie seized control o f the im p o rta n t and controversial p o lice d ep artm en t and w ith th a t m ove, dem oted C om m issio ne r Charles Jordan to the head o f the Parks Bureau. Iva n cie w ill now become the quarterback and Jordan the water boy, which further shows us how closely p o litic s and sports are related. In the sport w o rld , i t ’ s o .k . fo r Blacks to play m inor roles and the tro u b le never starts u n til y o u ’ re placed in a leadership p o s itio n . Commissioner Jordan was leading a m a jo r d e p a rtm e n t, and he is a Black man and in these time the two never go h a n d -in -h a n d . I respect C om m issioner Jordan fo r being a man, however, the same cannot be said fo r our Mayor. M a y o r Iva ncie c o u ld very w ell take a few lessons fro m U niversity o f Oregon Coach Rich Brooks, who is a man. When coach B ro o k s ’ p ro gram came under fire , and as his players were charged w ith v io la tio n s ; in stead o f panicing and succumbing to pressure put on by the press and outside pressure groups to dismiss certain players, Coach Brooks stood erect in the pocket, never yielded, told his players that he was behind them and had the utmost confidence in them . A nd believe me that does mean som ething. Iva ncie never backed his q u a rte rb a ck and th a t means something. S peaking at J e ffe rso n H igh School com m encem ent exercises M on da y n ig h t, C om m issio ne r Jordan said, “ 1 wish 1 could tell you that you’ ll be judged strictly on your merits, but I can’ t. I wish I could tell y o u ,” he said, “ that you w on’ t be judged by the co lo r o f yo u r skin, but I can’ t . ” I wish I could tell my readers that Jordan d id n ’ t lose the Police D ep artm en t fo r the above reasons but I can’ t. • C leo-Lillian Social Club is rapidly becoming the b illa rd capitol o f the Rose C ity . Last S unday’ s doubles to u rn a m e n t a ttra c te d the to p male players in the C ity . Eighteen teams began play Saturday at 5:00 p.m ., and the winners were crowned M o n d a y m o rn in g at 1:30 A .M , C h ile Baines and Sandy to o k to p honors by e lim in a tin g Ted H am p to n and Ray, 2-0 in the fin a ls . C h ile Baines showed up w ith probably the finest female player in the City. There were many action packed match-ups but the best came o ff in the fo u rth round when Kenny M it chell and W illie Jordan took on the eventual winners. M itch e ll th rille d the audience w ith three spectacular shots, but the pair o f C h ili and San dy were too much. Jordan lost his shooting eye after the second round putting a tremend ous load on the shoulders o f M it chell. A fte r defeating M itch e ll and Jordan, the champs completely b lit zed the rest o f the field. of ineligible contractors.
