W hat They M ust Do: 1. The utility company must give at least 15 days written notice to the customer and occupant before a shut-off. 2. They must also give 72-hour notice. They must try to contact the customer in person. 3. Immediately before a shut-off they must try again to contact the customer and occupant. W hat They M ust Say: 1. When the representative o f the u tilitv contacts the customer 72 hours before the shut-ofl must: a) explain the o ptions, fo r example, the lO^o plan b) Explain possible available assistance. 2. No shut o ff will take place if before the s h u t-o ff date the customer pays I0 ff’o o f the overdue bill or $10 (whichever is greater) and signs an agreement with the utility company to pay the rem ainder within 10 months. 3. No shut-off w ill take place if a doctor, registered nurse, licensed nurse practitioner, clinic or agency providing health care notifies the u tility by phone, and in w ritin g w ithin 14 days o f the phone call, that a shut-off will significantly en danger the health o f the customei or someone in the household. Unless the condition is chronic the health certification must be renewed every 30 days. 4. Before a shut-ofl the utilities shall inform customers of the names and phone numbers o f units within the Departm ent o f Human Re sources and service agencies who can help the customer determine what assistance may be available. You Can Appeal If You do not receive proper notification, the utility has not o f fered or has refused a IO°'o payment plan, you entered into a payment plan that needs to be modified and you are threaicned with a shut-off, they refuse to restore service, or if you feel you were treated unfairly.
