W ith a re energizing visit back to O m a h a , d u rin g a summ ers scheduled vacatio n , V e rn o n ’ s d ream to have a team o f some k in d kept h im h o p efu l fo r his P o rtla n d hom e. Jefferson H ig h School, under the renow ned p rin c ip a l H o p k in s Jenkins, received V e rn o n in transfer fro m Benson and here he played v a r sity tra c k , basketball and baseball. T h a t was d u rin g the w eek. O n weekends, V e rn o n kept at o rg an iza tio n al things and he and his teams began to be kn o w n as the “ L o y a l C o m ra d e s .” A little fin a n cial help came fro m a few local Black businessmen to help w ith u nifo rm s and eq u ip m ent.
