Ms. Jones was a national winner in M cD onald's "S a lu te to teh Am erican F a m ily" promotion. Joining her and daughter Stephanie in ac cepting the award from Portland City Commissioner Frank Ivancie are Keith A. Phildius, district sales m anager. U nited A irlines, w hich handled travel arrangements; Bill Jordan, manager of the N. Lombard McDonald's where Ms. Jones' winning entry was selec ted; and I.C. IAI) Laviske of H. E. Management, Inc., owner-operators of the Lombard McDonald's. Betty Jones plans family reunion Betty Jones is making plans for a fam ily reunion. And they’ ll be coming from far places — Missouri, Kentucky, perhaps Mississippi. The nice thing is, Ms. Jones doesn’ t have to worry about airfare, hotel bills or miscellaneous expenses. That’ s all taken care o f because she is one o f the national winners in Mc Donald’s "Salute to the American Family.” Each day for 28 days through July 16th, M cD onald's is m aking a national award o f a “ Fam ily Reunion for ten.” Ms. Jones was the third such national winner. Her prize consists o f round-trip airfare for ten relatives or loved ones from anywhere in the continental U.S. at a date o f her choosing, hotel accomodations, a cash stipend and a fam ily reunion dinner at the N. Lombard McDonald's in Portland, where she made her winning entry. Travel arrangements are being made by United Airlines. A t last count, Ms. Jones, who is office manager o f the North Port land o ffic e o f the P o rtla n d M e tro p o lita n H um an Relations Try new catfish recipes Some people enjoy spending a leisure day catching their own cat fish, while others would rather catch them the easy way at the neigh borhood fish market. Whatever the method, now is a good time to try a new recipe. Saucy Broiled Catfish 2 dressed buffalo or other fish, fresh or frozen 1 cup melted fat or oil 1/4 cup chopped parsley 2 tablespoons catsup 2 tablespoons wine vinegar 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 teaspoons basil 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Thaw frozen fish. Clean, wash, and dry fish. Place in a single layer in a shallow baking dish. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour sauce over fish and let stand fo r 30 minutes, turning once. Remove fish, reserving sauce for basting. Place fish on a well-greased broiler pan. Brush with sauce. Broil about 3 in ches from source o f heat, 5 to 7 minutes or until lightly browned, basting twice. Turn carefully and brush other side with sauce. Broil 5 to 7 minutes longer, basting oc casionally, until fish is brown and flakes easily when tested with a fork. Serves 6. On Sunday, July 16th, final day o f the “ Salute to the American Family” each M cD onald's in Oregon and Southwest Washington w ill select its own fam ily reunion winner from among its own entries during the promotion. Each o f these winners w ill receive an award similar to Ms. Jones' except that it w ill be for two, rather than ten, family members. W ith nearly forty McDonald's in Oregon and Southwest Washington, it appears that a lo t o f fa m ily reunioning w ill be going on in these parts in the next few months. THE EYES IN Creepy Crawler classes w ill be held at the Washington Park Zoo at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, from July 10th through Sep tember 1st. The classes arc free for all children on the zoo grounds ages seven through twelve. Those interested may sign up at the Insect Zoo on the day o f the class. The Creepy Crawler classes will last about one-half hour and w ill in clude all sorts o f exciting activities such as insect safaris, studying living specimens, and drawing and observ ing insects in the wild. Come to Your Zoo and while you are here, participate in one or more o f the Creepy Crawlery classes at the Insect Zoo. For more information, call the zoo education office, 226- 1561. Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. Beat eggs slightly and blend in the milk. Dip fish in the eggs and roll in cornmeal. Place fish in a heavy fry pan which contains about 1/8 inch melted fat, hot but not sm oking. F ry at a moderate heat. When fish is brown on one side, tu rn ca refully and brown the other side. Cooking time is about 10 minutes, depending on the thickness o f the fish. Drain on absorbent paper. Serve immediately on a hot platter, plain or with a sauce. Serves 6.
