Bill Kimball and C .B . Woods. The new crowd, however, won't be skating on what Woods more profitably calls " T h e biggest dance floor in Oregon." " S u re , there’ ll be a few chairs around the edges for the old folks who need 'e m ," he says. "B u t out there, everybody w ill be d a n c in g !" "E veryb o d y” includes anyone aged sixteen and older who likes to dance No liquor will be served at the new “ live" disco dub, which has been dub bed "Odyssey 3001." " L iv e " is the word to emphasize here "N ational top name soul and disco acts" will be featured on Friday and Saturday nights, while top flight road bands will fill in on Tuesday through Thursday nights from nine til two. A disc jockey will provide taped disco music during all breaks. Record ing artist/performer Billy Preston is the headliner at the grand opening June 30th and July 1st. W oods, who was involved in a similar venture, "S ir W illiam s" in Las Vegas, says nearly $500,000 will have been invested at the time o f opening. A new light and sound system is planned, and dancers will be surrounded with mirrors on the walls. The usual mirror balls will be dangling amid flashing strobes, while the stage will be lit with 48,000 watts o f color. A spokesman for T G M , the sound and lig h t com pany doing the in* stallation, calls the room acoustics " n o t outrageous, but plenty good enough," going on to say, "These folks are trying to do it right. What we re using would be a top class sound system in any club." There are two dressing rooms ad jacent to the 800 square foot stage where stars o f varying magnitude will be able to primp before each show. Woods, himself a musician who will perform on the big stage, claims a sin cere interest in local talent, saying he will employ suitable acts whenever he can. W ith a capacity for 2,700 people, the Odyssey 3001 could be a very big deal for the Willamette Valley. For more information, please con tact: Odyssey 3001, C .B . Let’s talk about Sweet Honey in the Rock. Sweet Honey in the Rock is a group of four Black women: Bernice Reagon. Evelyn Harris, Patricia Johnson and Yasmeen W illiams, whose means o f musical expression is " a cappella’ * with occasional accompaniment. Their range is wide and their voices weave together marvellously to produce a sound that is rich and full. They sing Black traditional songs and their own compositions, written in the vein o f Black work songs, spirituals and songs o f protest And they sing with a strength and commitment that makes Black traditional music as p o w e rfu l a statem ent fo r Black women's experience today as it has been for Black people throughout history. Their performances provide an in tense musical and political experience. In the music of Sweet Honey, Black women make statements about their lives and raise questions about their lives through music from the Black tradition. In presenting their music they cover the spectrum of Black song. They cry, moan, preach, testify and rejoice. They make spine tingling, soul stirring music. The women do not see their musk as following any particular sound. Ber nice Reagon. folklorist, founder o f the group and cultural historian at the Smithsonian Institute, had this to say about Sweet Honey, "W hen we were forming, it was agreed that we would cover as wide a range o f material as possible. We are still seeking out audiences, still finding out exactly where our music can be received and appreciated. W e’ve done funerals and weddings, and we’ve developed a c h ild re n ’ s re p erto ire fo r school programs. We love performing at places in the community where music is needed to help people get through cer tain events in their lives." The group’s name stems from a refrain in a traditional Black spiritual. Bernice explains, "Th e name is derived from an old spiritual that refers to a land where sweet honey flows from the rocks. Honey, symbolizing warmth and sweetness; and rock symbolizing strength and consistency, which is what we try to convey in our song. I t ’s clear. The concept from whkh Sweet Honey in the Rock emotes is one that will become more and more in demand as Black people continue to depart from those assimilated musical concepts that have risen over the years. In this age o f "R oots" groups like Sweet Honey are kindling to spark the fires of the real meanings of soul musk. Experience Sweet Honey in the Rock for your soul.
