Energy is needed to keep body cells and in te rn a l organs fu n c tio n in g . Energy is also needed when new tissues are fo rm e d d u rin g g ro w th and pregnancy or after an injury. The body uses energy for muscular work as well. Energy requirements d iffer from in dividual to individual. They arc deter mined by age, sex, size and level o f physical activity. Food supplies the energy for the body. Food energy is measured in calories. Currently about 42 percent o f the calories in our diets come from fat, 46 percent from carbohydrates and 12 percent from protein. Protein and carbohydrates contain the same number o f calories — both supply a b ou t 50 calo rie s per tablespoon, which is four calories per gram o f weight in metric units. Fat, a more concentrated source o f food energy, contains more than twice as many calories as protein and car bohydrate. One tablespoon o f fat con tains nine calories per gram, which is equal to 127 calories per tablespoon. Alcohol also contains food energy. In metric units, one gram o f alcohol contains seven calories. Most foods contain a m ixture o f p ro tein , fat and carbohydrate. T o determine caloric value, a food is burn ed in a calorimeter to measure the energy released as heat. Woman teaches PCC engineering I f students can’t tell that tiny, youth ful Jan Hashimoto is an instructor by her appearance, her t-shirt will give her status away. The blue t-shirt she sometimes wears to class is emblazoned with white let ters that read "In s tru c to r." It was a gift from some o f Hashim oto’s women en gin eerin g students at P o rtla n d Com m unity College whose verse, o f fered with the t-shirt, told their sen timents: As a teacher you are able But we think you need a label T o show all the others That not all engineers are brothers. H ashim oto is q uite probably the only female engineering instructor in the state. She has just completed her first year teaching vocational-technical (lasses to en gin eerin g students at P C C ’ s Cascade Center and will return oext year to teach at the Sylvania Cen ter. She appears to be much younger than her actual thirty years o f age and she ended up in teaching more by ac cident than by design. " I ’d never considered applying for a teaching j o b , " recalls H a s h im o to . "B ut one day D ic k W ysong (engineering departm ent chairm an) called me up and said they needed a teacher right away, so I decided to do it .” Hashimoto was working for Hyster C o rp o ra tio n at the tim e and D ick Wysong knew her because she is a 1974 g ra d u a te fro m P C C ’ s m echanical engineering program. She has served on the advisory committee to the engineering depart ment since then. N ow , she says, she likes teaching enough to stay for at least another year, but so far is un committed beyond that. Being a woman instructor in the male-dominated field o f engineering is not without its problems, Hashimoto relates. " O f course I had some problems being accepted when I start ed,” she says. "W o m e n have the edge now in getting jobs because o f equal o p p o rtu n ity laws and I th in k they should take advantage o f it ."
