Urban llo rtic u h u rr Extension Agent Most of us feel a plant should weeive regular amounts of w a te r and fart direr since w e hve in such a scheduled manner ourselves But a plant vanes from week to week in Us need for nutrients and i U use oi w a te r depends on many factors such as heal, hum idity, drainage, etc. First of all. make sure the plant is in a pot that can d ra w away excess w a te r and is in a soil m ix tu re that supplies a ir, w ater and anchors the plant. You may need to do some repotting of the plant to supply these necessary items. W a ter should be given the plant only when the sod surface feels d ry. W hen w a te r is added, put on enough so some runs out the bottom of the pot and can be discarded. Irrig a tin g from the bottom is acceptable but every third w atering should be from the lop to flush excess fertilize r salts out of the sod. Place the plant where it w ill receive all passible sunlight w ithout being in direct sunlight. Many houseplant books are available at garden shops and bookstores, that can tell you the light requirem ents of vour specific plan t. High Blood Pressure remains Blacks #1 health problem Tw enty six percent of Black males and tw enty e ig h t percent of Black females have high blood pressure. It is s sym ptom ies disease but a very serious one when left untreated. T here’s a simple test to measure blood pressure. Be sure to have yours checked regularly W hile the exact cause o f hypertension is unknow n, it is recognised that there is a relationship between it and high sodium intake. So thousands of people w ith high blood pressure have been placed on a low sodium diet by th e ir doctors. Vegetables are an im portant part at everyone's d irt because they provide essential vitam ins and minerals and are usually \ erv low in calories. But they can pose a problem to people placed on sodium restricted diets. Most fresh vege tables are naturally low in sodium, but there are a few exceptions. Artichokes a id celery have a high sodium rontent. Canned vegetables should also be avoided since salt is usually added during process mg T here are special low sodium canned vegetables no the m arket, however, which can he substituted.
