Most of us feel a plant should

manner ourselves
But a plant vanes
from week to week in Us need for
nutrients and i U use oi w a te r depends on
many factors such as heal, hum idity,
drainage, etc.
First of all. make sure the plant is in a
pot that can d ra w away excess w a te r and
is in a soil m ix tu re that supplies a ir,
w ater and anchors the plant. You may
need to do some repotting of the plant to
supply these necessary items.
W a ter
should be given the plant only when the
sod surface feels d ry. W hen w a te r is
added, put on enough so some runs out
the bottom of the pot and can be
discarded. Irrig a tin g from the bottom is
acceptable but every third w atering
should be from the lop to flush excess
fertilize r salts out of the sod.
Place the plant where it w ill receive all
passible sunlight w ithout being in direct
sunlight.
Many houseplant books are
available at garden shops and bookstores,
that can tell you the light requirem ents of

Feeding is necessary only when the
plan is actively growing. Many indoor
plants will grow vigorously for awhile,
then go into a resting period at » h u h
u m r the fertilize r requirem ents are very
low. Keep in mind that the plant makes
iU own food by its leaf factory To do this
it needs light, air, some w ater and a
minimum of mineral elements. Seldom do
houseplants die of starvation, usually
they die because o f o ver fertilizing. Feed

plant fertilizers can be found in almost all

High Blood Pressure remains
Blacks #1 health problem
Tw enty six percent of Black males and
tw enty e ig h t percent of Black females
have high blood pressure.
It is s
sym ptom ies disease but a very serious
one when left untreated.
T here’s a
simple test to measure blood pressure. Be
sure to have yours checked regularly
W hile the exact cause o f hypertension
is unknow n, it is recognised that there is
a relationship between it and high sodium
intake. So thousands of people w ith high
blood pressure have been placed on a
low sodium diet by th e ir doctors.
Vegetables are an im portant part at
everyone's d irt because they provide
essential vitam ins and minerals and are
usually \ erv low in calories. But they can
pose a problem to people placed on
sodium restricted diets. Most fresh vege
tables are naturally low in sodium, but
there are a few exceptions. Artichokes
a id celery have a high sodium rontent.
Canned vegetables should also be avoided
since salt is usually added during process
mg T here are special low sodium canned
vegetables no the m arket, however,
which can he substituted.
When you can t use salt to season your
vegetables, a flavorful sauce w ill perk
them up. Another w ay to add rich taste
to all foods is to cook w ith a salt free
margarine. such as Fleischmann a.
