May 27. 1976 Jefferson actors attend meet by Allen Jones Entertainment Katings Fair • Good • • Katelleet A troupe of 36 performers from Jeffer son High School’s performing arts pro gram will make a trip to Muncie, Indiana next month to perform for the Inter national Theatre Arts Conference at Ball State University June 21st through the 26th. The group has been invited to perform Jefferson's spring production of “See saw” before the 2,500 conferees from the U.S. and several foreign countries. The students are currently working to earn $80 to cover fees and room and board during the conference. Students have scheduled a couple of garage sales besides selling candy and pepperoni. Wanda Nichols, director of the produc tion and Department Chairman of the Performing Arts Magnet Program, said the students have redone some of the numbers in the production to accommo date the much larger facilities to be available at the conference. She said the stage at Ball State University is twice as big as Jefferson's so the production will have to be altered to make better use of the facilities. GIL SCOTT HERON - A NEW BREED • • • Aside from Gil Scqtt Heron's obvious talents as a performer. Heron's profound belief in his musical compositions sets him apart from the crowd. As I was surprised to find out, his popularity tends to be limited to the seventeen to thirty age group. One of the main reasons 1 suppose, is because his songs are political with heavy racial overtones. Among the "college set" in particular he is considered a super star. He is the "Black revolutionary of song" - if you will. Fred Baker of Fred's Place is to be commended for the turn of events now taking place in his establishement. Gil Scott Heron and his eight piece aggregation "did their thing" last night to a capacity salt and pepper audience. Most of his selections were taken from his latest album entitled: "From South Africa To South Carolina" (see what I mean). If you think the cover namt is deceiving, it's not. in it you'll find tunes like: "Gospel Train." a Alice Coletraine composition: “The Good Old Days," a song depicting the good life for the man and constant hell for minorities: “Ain't No Such Thing As A Superman." "Must Be Something We Can Do." "Sharing," a ballad w ritten and sung by Victor Brown, a young man, who in my opinion sings better than Heron, and is featured vocalist with the group known as the Mid Night Band. Who are all multi talented entertainers. He closed the set with his most controversial tune to date "Johannesburg." The entire evening was entertaining and educational. Earl Crumble of the Scanner was also on hand to check out the show. We both agreed it was a dynomate performance. Without question Gil Scott Heron has established himself in the world of musical expression. He loves life, music and more importantly his people. And if you re Black, you just have to love him for it!!!! Camp beckons Mothers of low income, income de prived from welfare, social security, or low wages, with children between the ages of six months and twelve years and would like to get away from it all, can register for the Salvation Arm y’s Mo thers and Children's Camp to be held June 23rd through the 28th. Mothers go with their children to ramp. Nursery care is provided for children five years and under, children from six to twelve years will have the ex perience of a regular camp program, and mothers can enjoy special programs and relaxation. Schedule for the day includes spei' ora. a slideshow, skits, and workshops on topics such as women political prisoners, racism and sexism in prison, family and children of prisoners. Potluck dinner is at 5:00 p.m. Childcare will be provided. "Please make these side seats available to the handicapped and elderly passenger." Decals carrying this request are going up on fifty T ri Met buses this weekend and the results will be closely observed. Public reaction and comments from bus operators will provide T ri Met with the answer to whether or not the decals should be placed on every bus. Will the young and able bodied relinquish the convenient side seats at the front of bus? That is the intent of the message. Some elderly or handicapped passengers have real difficulty negotiating the aisle to a seat further bark in the bus. If at the end of a trial period the decals have proven effective, they will be used on all T ri Met buses. The State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation will meet at 1:30 p.m.. Thursday. June 10th at the Pillock Mansion in Portland. Major items on the agenda include: four nominations to the National Register; a review of historic properties within historic districts for purposes of the Special Tax Assessment Act passed by the 1975 state legislature; and review of the proposed fiscal year 1977 apportionment warrant, which is Oregon's request for funding for preservation purposes. The Management Development Institute of Marylhurst Education Center will offer a selection of its evening classes during the summer months for working men and women in the Greater Portland area. Class offerings have been compacted into a five week period commencing Monday, June 21st. to allow those participating to plan for summer vacations.
