The sty le of play w as d ifferen t from
other gam es e v e r played in P ortland. The
gam e w as played under international
rules, m eaning the m idfield line w as the
offside mark. The players had to bunch
up a lot m ore, so th ere w e re n ’t a lot of
long, wild p asses.
S in ce it w as an
exhibition gam e, th e play w a s not as
in ten se as norm al, but it certain ly w as
a g g ressiv e. In fact, it w a s about th e b est
played gam e in th e T im b ers tw o year
history.

after Rioch kicked dow n their team m ate
A lex M cDonald, Rioch escap ed from tw o
players, and then w as cha«ed around the
field. Rioch received a caution from the
referee.

soccer at the end of the season . B esides

The win for G lasgow w a s their second
w ithin 24 hours. T hey beat S e a ttle in the
K ingdom e. Satu rd ay nigh t, 1-0.
The R angers are th e S c o ttish Champ
ions, and sh ow ed w hy w ith e x ce lle n t ball
control and precision passing.
They
played Portland ev en ly through out m ost
of th e first half, but w e re in charge for
m ost of the second. T h ere w ere several
near m isses for both team s, and th e score
easily could have g en e one w ay or the
other.
Chris D angerfield put P ortland on the
board first at 23:56 of th e first half. He
dribbled the ball b etw een tw o R angers
and knocked a slow roller in to th e goal.
Tom m y M cLean of G lasgow scored about
five m inutes later. H e blasted a bullet
past Portland goalie Jim Cum bes. The
ball travelled th e len gth of th e shot,
about tw o feet off th e ground.

later date. It should be said th a t Portland
V alve could have th e b est record, if th ey
com e out ahead in th eir m ake up gam es.
The first gam e to be finish ed is again st
H arder M echanics and in th a t one Harder
is ahead by tw o runs w ith tw o innings to
go. But th ere's a little longer row to hoe
again st th e tough P acific N .W . Bell gam e,
in th at out one, Coach P a y n e pulled his
team off the field and filed a p ro test, w ith
Bell lead in g 10-1 in th e second inning
and at bat.

paths.

right hander, held P acific’s bats in check
throughout th e gam e.
