Reynolds The Afro-American Bicentennial Quilt Club, a group of fourteen women and one university student, are busy sewing the final quilting stitches in their prized quilt. Why did this group decide to make a Black History Quilt? It all started with a _ news article about The Oregon Quilt. Mrs. Oaly J. Gates saw the article, started calling some of her friends and became the organizer for this inspira tional and historical project. Each block tells of a famous Black person in the : United States, or of an important event or law that has changed the history of Blacks. It is hoped the thirty blocks of this quilt will encourage other groups to make supplem entary quilts depicting Black History. This quilt club has been planning and sewing about two years and plans to present their quilt for public inspection beginning July 1, 1976 at 3:30 p.m. On that day a ribbon cutting ceremony is planned at the Oregon Historical Society in its Liberty Corners section. On Saturday, July 10,1976 a public reception will be held to present the quilt and open an exhibit of historical items of North west Black History lOregon). The hours will be from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. It is noted that this quilt and historical exhibit will be available for inspection each week day through September 30,1976. Parents are urged to bring their children to see the quilt and exhibit. A brochure is planned that will give a few details about each block and the name of the creator of each block. A few of the blocks included are: two blocks about Frederick Douglass, the Great Emancipator and of his home preserved in Washington, D.C.; James Weldon Johnson who wrote “Lift Every Voice and Sing,"; Booker T. Washington, who founded Tuskegee Institute; Marian An derson, the great contralto; Alonzo Pie tro, the pilot of the Nina and York, the Black servant of Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The absent members who are not shown in the photo include: Mrs. Robert Canada. Mrs. Phillip Owens, Mrs. Re becca Miller (creator of five blocks), Mrs. William McCoy. Mrs. Webster Brown and Miss Sylvia Gates of Stanford University. Save $5 Sears TM On Kings Road double knit slacks ,2 ’7 Trim Regular Trojan goes f i l l i throttle! Regular »18.00.
