There Is a techni que fo r relaxing which can te used anywhere. Dnce learned, it can 1« used to achieve total ixxly relaxation or to spot re lax a group of tense m uscles. S tart with one ir m . Bugin ning w ith the fin g e is , d ite c t your attention to eschgroupof m uscles. M en ta lly in stru ct them to " l e t go” . There is a good psychological reason fo r using the term " l e t go” . In stead of " r e la x ” . " R e la x " to many people means a positive tiling they must do. To " le t go ', on the other hand, im plies to do nothing. A tensem uscle la already doing too much and needs to release Its ' excessive (Mill on the body stru ctu re s. Proceed in turn toeachpart of the body. Include face, neck, scalp, shouldeis, abdomen, chest, legs and feet. O ver and o v e i, re|®at to each p a re " f et go, let g o , le t go.” If you feel a pa rt becoming tense again, re d ire c t your attention to Itfo r a few seconds. The a t i of " le ttin g go” Is a physi cal s k ill and must be learned by tl® body thtough practice as any other such s k ill. Keep at it. I he knowledge of this technique w ill stand you in good stead a ll the re s t of your life , fo r when you need it. It w ill always be there. There Is a way of breathing that is also helpful in attaining physical relaxation. Because It is hard fo r tl® body to be tense when you are exhaling. It consists p r im a r ily of con tro lle d exhalation. Inhale slow ly and deeply to a count of fiv e . Exhale even m ore slowly to a count a t ten. Continue breathing in this manner fo r about three m inutes. D on't keep It up too long, though, as It Is possible fo r your body to absorb m ore oxygen when you breathe this way. W hile a li t tle additional oxygen w ill clear your bi ain and help you relax, too much w ill make you llgh- headed.
