Relax to
In o ld e r to esse nervous
tension, physical relaxation is
as im p ortan t as mental relax
ation, which was discussed
last week. There Is a techni
que fo r relaxing which can te
used anywhere. Dnce learned,
it can 1« used to achieve total
ixxly relaxation or to spot re
lax a group of tense m uscles.
S tart with one ir m . Bugin
ning w ith the fin g e is , d ite c t
your attention to eschgroupof
m uscles.
M en ta lly in stru ct
them to " l e t go” . There is a
good psychological reason fo r
using the term " l e t go” . In
stead of " r e la x ” . " R e la x " to
many people means a positive
tiling they must do. To " le t
go ', on the other hand, im plies
to do nothing. A tensem uscle
la already doing too much and
needs to release Its ' excessive

Proceed in turn toeachpart
of the body. Include face, neck,
scalp, shouldeis, abdomen,
chest, legs and feet. O ver and
o v e i, re|®at to each p a re " f et
go, let g o , le t go.” If you feel
a pa rt becoming tense again,
re d ire c t your attention to Itfo r
a few seconds. Asyoudevelop
s k ill in " le ttin g go” you may
notice that relaxed parts of
your body feel lieavy as your
m uscles allow the bed or ch a ir
io support you. There may al
so he a slig h t ting lin g sensa
tion fro m Increased c irc u la
tion.
Do not 1« discouraged if you
firei it d iff ic u lt t o achieve com
plete relaxation at fir s t . The
a t i of " le ttin g go” Is a physi
cal s k ill and must be learned
by tl® body thtough practice
as any other such s k ill. Keep
at it. I he knowledge of this
technique w ill stand you in
good stead a ll the re s t of your
life , fo r when you need it. It
w ill always be there.
There Is a way of breathing
that is also helpful in attaining
physical relaxation. Because
It is hard fo r tl® body to be
tense when you are exhaling.
It consists p r im a r ily of con
tro lle d exhalation.
Inhale
slow ly and deeply to a count of
fiv e . Exhale even m ore slowly
to a count a t ten. Continue
breathing in this manner fo r
about three m inutes. D on't
keep It up too long, though, as
It Is possible fo r your body to
absorb m ore oxygen when you
breathe this way. W hile a li t
tle additional oxygen w ill clear
your bi ain and help you relax,
too much w ill make you llgh-
headed.
