Portland / Observer Thursday April 29.1971 PCC aircraft students tops Students preparing to become ce rtifie d a irc ra ft mechanics at Portland CommunityCollege lead the nation in average scores on the Federal Aviation A dm inistra- tion examination, known fo r th e ir stringency. The PCC program , under way fo r two years, is ce rtifie d by the FAA to prepare both airfra m e and powerplant mechanics. During the last 24 month, a- cross the nation, applicants corp- pleting the a irc i aft mechanics ce rtification tests successfully on the fir s t try totalled only 73 percent. PCC applicants scored 96 percent. Powerplant m echan icscertifi- cation examinations showed 74 percent successful completion on the fir s t try , while PCC students scored 89 percent. The PCC Droaram is located in surplus Oregon A ir National Guard buildings on the south side °* Portland International A irp o rt. More than 200 students are now working in the program; each is eligible fo r theFAA examinations a fte r 18 months of preparation, “ We like to give live expert- ence," says Dan B eltram i, as- sembly and rigging in structor.H e explained that one of the reasons f ° r the high student scores on the FAA examinations is "because at PCC we get the students working on actual a irc r a ft."
