Man mailed with stamps Until a few years back, it had been possible for a person to walk into a post office In England, buy a lot of stamps, and have hlrnself ‘ Ispatched to some destination in the United Kingdom. If equipped with a special delivery stamp, the mailman had to escort him right to his door-step and ring twice. I be last man known to have mailed himself used the postal service regulation to outwit the B ritish army. Ona v is it in 1920 to the Island of Guernsey In thelingllsh Channel the man found, when he set out for home, that soldiers had taken all the places In the only boat. The soldier’ s orders and they had p r i o rity over all other passengers. But the resourceful gentleman knew that mall had p rio rity over soldiers. So he attached stamps to himself and the post office had to put him aboard. I wonder if the B ritish had the right to m ail away (to fa r off com ers of the Kingdom) other persons? Almost everything that is known about diseased lungs has been discovered from dead lungs. A fter a lung has been stained, shrunk, and prepared fo r 'tudy, though, it may no longer resemble the living lung. Even the techni que of rapidly freezing the lung does not perm it continuous ob - servatlons. At the Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, D r. Richard Harbord has de veloped a technique to see lungs in action. He inserts a cup-shap ed plexiglas window into a rabbit’ s chest w all. The window is inserted on the right side, re placing the sixth and seventh ribs which have been removed. I he rabbit’ s lung is drawn up against the plexiglas by suction, and the lung surface can be ex- .nined with a type of light m icro scope. Photographs can betaken with the aid of an electronic flash held over the window. 7he trouble with the technique is that itdoes not reveal what hap pens in the part of the lung below the surface. But it is an important development in direct observa tion of Irving lungs at work. The observation can help in the fight against respiratory diseases. One of the specific problems D r. Harbord is concerned with is atelectasis, a condition which involves a collapse of the a ir sacs of the lungs. In humans, there are 300 m illio n a ir sacs in each lung, where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
