But it is an important develop ment in d ire ct observation of 11 v- ing lungs at work. The observation can help in the fight against respiratory diseases. One of the specific problems Or. Harbord is concerned with is ate lectasis, a condition which in volves a collapse of the a ir sacs of the lungs. In humans, there are 300 m illio n a ir sacs in each lung, where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.
