(here is a ground swell from the bottom declaring Justice now.” The style of life as we have known It has changed making new demands upon our view ol the m in is try . No longer can we see it as a static re a lity of traditional form s. It has been suggested that modem man has come of age The awesome responsibility of his “ new found” re a lity is both a blessing and a curse. It is then necessary that the m inis try , if it is a m in istry, par- ticipate in the dymnamic real ity of encounter and struggle to give both inspiration and direction to the new thrust of community life , (here is a price to be paid by the modern churchman. 1'he s p irit of the modern technologically o ri ented world relegates to the trash heaps ceremony without service, tradition without mean ing, prayers without legs, faith without works. The c ris is of our m in istry in Protestant Am erica is tw o-fold. We have lost the power of the protes- tant principal to be c ritic a l and transform ing as suggested by Paul T illic h In his book "T H E PROTESTANT ER A " to be c ritic a l and t r a n s form ing” . Church was born out of the ges ta lt of oppression. Richard A llen, prophet and pragnatist was relevant to the predicament. The edodus from our cliurch and the lack of the pilgrimage to It may attributable to the fact that we have become patty to and a participant in the in stitutional form which caused Richard Allen to walk out of St. George Church- across town from where we meet today. 185 years later we are, stand ing now on the cutting edge of a nation constantly polarized between blacks and whites, a presidential commission vali dating a disease that sickens our society—"w h ite and black racism .” The church at Philadelphia, in order to save herself, must recapture what she found in the birth pains in her original d e live ry. The call to relevance is both prophetic and prag m atic. In simple terms it is more than adding up members, cutting up d is tric ts , electing Bishops. Is the s p irit of God once again let loose in the w orld. It is more than add ing up members. It is not bargain basement, cheap class activity m irro re d in political v!ctriolics(nam e calling). It see the challenge as the chance to redeem itse lf. It sees the nemaces in the nature of our deeds here and now "th e judg ment of God upon us” . We must be great because oui God is great. Our members are too few, our budget too short, o u r imagination too narrow and and our s p irit too hungry What then must the m inistry be about?
