He knows from experience— he’ s been teaching a highly suc cessful “ creative job search" program at Portland Community C o lle g e fo r a long tim e. "T h e re 's room in the class for m o re ," he says, "and right now there should be many who could p r o fit." "N o employer is basically in terested in what he can do for you," says Thompson. “ He has to be intersted in what you can do fo r h im ." That's the basis on which his students learn to present them selves to any prospective em ploy e r-w h a t they can do fo r the employer. "They leam how to do this by making a lis t of all th e ir past successes," T h o m p s o n says. "They write out everything they have ever done, and then we take a ll the pluses and usable facts...and put them together into a solid sales-story resume that helps them te ll the employ e r what they can do fo r h im ." This simple technique puts the job-seeker in the best pos sible position to use some salesmanship on the employer, girded with fact and underlining his positive experiences. The technique works; a recent s u r v e y showed more than 87 percent of 1,330 form er stu dents fe lt the course had helped th e m to build confidence and find a job. The course is offered every Monday at 7 p.m. at Failing H all, 049 S.W. Porter Street. It Is free; even the in structor's tim e Is donated. Thompson works as a salesman at Oregon In d u s t r i a l Factors; he declares ' ' t h e r e ' s great satisfaction in seeing someone buckle down to the job of telling his own story well...and getting a position as a result of his efforts.
