That John Weinberg might have a chance to earn enough to par his attorney fees, he was released on hit own recognisance by Presiding Cir cuit Judge Morrow late Monday. De spite the fact that he had been a fugitive from Justice since August S. 1820, and had Just been located and arrested In Dallas, Weinberg was al lowed to go on his own pledge that he would return for trial. The action of the presiding Judge was over the strenuous protest of Deputy District Attorney Pierce. Rot coe P. Hurst and Arthur I. Moulton. appointed by the court to represent W cmberg, would receive no fee from the state for defending him. Such fees are paid only In murder cases. Weinberg was broke." GRASS, WEEDS MENACE 54 Fire Alarms Oat of ISO Caused by Grass Fires. Statistics gathered In the fire bu reau by City Commissioner Blgelow show that during th month of Au gust 36 per cent of the alarms turned In resulted from grass fires and 47 per cent of the calla from September 1 to September 19 resulted from the tame cause. In addition, Commissioner Blgelow ttatet that In August one man wat aeni from various fire houses to quench grass firea S different times and up to the present time In this month the fire department hat been required to send one man oat to put grass fires under control 111 times. "These figures show that the grass-cutting campaign that Is now being waged has greater purpose than beautifying the city." said Com missioner Blgelow. A small Iron anchor of the sailing vessel model of many years ago was Picked up recently by the Tort of Portland dredge Columbia at the mouth of the Willamette river. The hook, with about 15 fathoms of chain, was ruste-i as if it had been sub merged for a long time. Nothing about it would Indicate the Identity of the vessel that lost It. The chain fouled the cutter of the dredge so that work bad! to be suspended until It cou d be untangled and the anc'io. brought to thi surface. The dredge Coluntbla Is Invading new territory at the mouth of the Willamette and dredging a porMon of the river which has never ben deepened artificially before. Now that the project depth of S3 feet haa been reached In the main cliannel this channel Is being widened to 1000 feet to prevent next summer's ahoal- Ing f-.om interfering with the move ment of vessels. POLICE CHIEF GOES EAST Jenkins to Attend Conference of National Crime Bureau. Police Chief Jenkins will leave to day for New Tork, where he will at tend a conference of the national po lice bureau. The plan of the national bureau calls for a general system of reports and co-operation between the police bureaus of all the larger citiea of the country. Chief Jenkins has been appointed Oregon manager of the national or ganization, and during his trip east will visit a number of tbe more Im portant cltlea for the purpose of studying police methods. Before re turning to Portland the chief will attend a convention of the Interna tional Traffic Officers association to be held at Oakland. Cal- later In October.
