Prices in the stocte market crumbled in the fairly active last hour of trading today. The declines, which were the most severe in many months, came unex pee ted 1 y. When the market opened speculative In terests resumed their operations in a cheer ful frame of mind, evidently taking little heed of such recent events as the ulti matum of the railroad brotherhoods and other disturbing developments. Decidedly less optimism was shown, however, by con servative financial interests, which expressed the opinion that the railroad sltuatipn and the general trend of affairs at Washington were calculated to unsettle commerce and industry. The market rose and fell between these dierpent views during the early and In termediate stages of the session, but fell ing of the most aggressive character In the final period wiped out all gains and left many severe net losses. The setback began with Fteels, equipments, oils and miscellaneous shares, rails dis playing comparative steadiness. Liquida tion was hastened by J.he circulation of rumors dealing with the proposed federal prosecution of numerous important in dustrial concerns, particularly the pack ing companies. It was a matter of board roora gossip that President Wilson's address before con gress tomorrow would recommend drastic action against so-called profiteers and that many industrial interests not hitherto men tioned were likely to come under the govern ment's displeasure. The market was demoralized at the close, when trading assumed such enormous pro- portions as to aeiay rinal prices by almost half an hour. Net losses fo 5 to 10 points extended throughout the list. kd... amounted to l,f50.0O0 shares. Honds were irregulr.r at the outset hut vteaaenea with stocks on unlimited offer ings.
