TITE MOKXTXG OKEGOXIAX, FRIDAY, JULY 14, 1916. FLOUR GOES SOUTH Orders Are Placed With Mills in Interim. WHEAT MARKET STRONGER Bids nt Iiocal Exchange Are, AiIt vanced 1 to 3 1-2 Cents Oats Sales Iosted at Higher Prices. California Grain. Strong. TCheat bids -were raised 1 to 314 cents at the - Merchants' Exchange yesterday, and July bluestem again stood at the dollar nark. The margin between buyers" and sellers' - views was lessened, as the asked prices for August club, fife and bluestem were reduced, but this did not result In business. The market Is on a better footing, with a fair increase in the demand. For several days past interior mills have been buyers In a limited way. A number of flour orders from the Southern States have been placed In the Northwest, and as the mills were carrying light stocks of wheat, they entered . the open market to replenish. The Puget Sound mills have since come into the mar ket for wheat and are offering somewhat higher prices than are current here. It is denied that the sound mills are buying wheat for account of Oriental or other cx- ' port flour orders. It Is known the tide water mills have been offered southern flour business, but it is said they cannot . compete against the country mills for the trade.' The amount of southern business placed to date Is understood to have reached respectable proportions. Its appearance at this time is ascribed to the flurry in the Middle Western markets, occasioned by the black rust scare. Two hundred tons of July oats were sold at the Exchange at 27 and 200 tons of August oats brought These prices were 50 cents over the bids of the pre ceding day. Barley bids were raised .5 cents to $1 a ton. Barley and oats ware considerably firmer at San Francisco. The southern market for oats has been strength ened by the stoppage of shipments from this ' section by the longshoremen- strike. Whole and cracked corn prices have been advanced a ton in response to higher corn prices East. Corn stocks here are very ! small. Corn meal Quotations were raised 10?rl3 cents a tale. Argentine shipments this week are esti- " mated at 1,600,000 bushels of wheat and ' 850.000 bushels of corn. Terminal receipts, in cars, were reported by the Merchants' Exchange as follows: ! The new beet sugar season opened yester day with tho arrival here of the first car of .-new-crop beet from the Visalia, Cal., rc ' finery. Sampling of the shipment indicated its excellent quality. With the steady lm - provement that is being made in the manu facture of beet sugar, the question Is being asked in the trade why the 20-ccnt differ ential between the prices of cane and beet . sugar should bo maintained in favor of the former sort. Down In Southern California they have already eliminated the dlfferen , tlal, and it is only a question of time be , fore the tamo action is taken here. Oregon is now ono of tho sugar beet-growing states and friends of the industry would like to see the domestic article given a fair show. LEMONS ARE IT 50 CENTS PER BOX California Market Higher, Owing to Strong Demand From East. Lemon prices were advanced 50 cents a box yesterday In response to three advances that occurred at shipping points the day be fore. The strength of the California mar. Selling of a broader and more promiscuous character tnan that or any recent period broke out afresh today, depressing prices of erstwhile lavorites to lowest prices of the year, and for a time causing unsettlement in stand ard shares. The decline gathered much of its momentum from the short Interest, that faction extending its operations into new fields, Incidentally adding to the Impairment of stocks which already had suffered se vere attrition. Trading was on a large scale and wholly at the expense of values, except in the last hour, when short covering brought about a partial readjustment, and moderate recoveries from lowest levels. Hates for one-way .passenger traffic across the continent will be raised about September 1. All lines operating out of the Northwest will enforce the new rate, riound-trtp tickets will not be affected. Ji. K. Ueigert, passenger rate clerk for the O.-W. It. & N. Company, re turned yesterday from SC. Paul, where he attended a conference with rate clerks of other Northwestern lines con tinuing over a period of nearly four months. Mr. - Deigert reports that J the new rates havo been determined and that tariffs will be published and filed witn the Interstate Commerce Commission within a few days. These new rates will bo charged under authority granted the carriers recently by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Under this decision tho Commission grants the railroads the privilege of -ignoring the local rate regulations prevailing in tho several states in 'fixing rates for interstate business. Many of the Middle Western states have 2-cent fare laws. Under existing rate schedules the carriers collect no more than 2 cents per mile .for the haul across those states. The new rates, however, will provide for slightly higher rates in some of thoso states, varying from 2. it to 2.6 cents per mile, according to physical conditions and other factors. The precise amount of the increases has not been figured out, but it is esti mated that the advance in the rate be tween Portland and Chicago, for in stance, will be about $1.50. with a pro portionate advance oa other trips.
