The Board of Education has decided not to close the public schools Monday. May 31 when the Portland G. A. post, will hold Memorial day cxerciees. A letter was sent the board asking that the school be closed on that day to give school chil dren an opportunity of witnessing the patriotic exercises, but In view of the opening of the Rose Festival and the giving of Friday afternoon preceding memorial to the old soldiers to talk to the children it wan decided that It would not be wise to close the schools on Mon day. Patrolman Burke took her to the police station and kept her there until her father called and took charge of her. The tot had been mlsatng from her home el nee o'clock in th. morning and had wandered about the city without anything to eat all day. wide-yed at the things she had seen for the first time and all so wondrous to her.
