The gulch -had been partially filled by uump wagons, dui Dump cars are now being employed to finish the embank ment, ana it win be completed within a few days. Thla embankment Is part of the Improvement of Belmont street which will finally reach from East Water street to West avenue. A considerable portion of the atreet has already been paved and contract has been let for part of the unfinished portion. There Is still another fill to be made between fast Nineteenth and East Twentieth streets, but this is not an extensive fill. Womei'j Club Todat. The regular meeting of the Women's. Club will be held In Women of Woodcraft Hall. Tenth and Taylor streets, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. The programme will consist of renditions by ia strong quartet under the direction of William Wallace Graham, vocal numbers by Misa Cleland, soprano, and selections by Mrs. Kelsey. the well known Interpretative reader. Salisbury led the dis cussion of the topic, "Universallsm In the !ioie.- it being a meeting of the Flor ence Meade Mission Circle. Rev. J. D. Corby, pastor of the TJniversalist Church of Good Tidings, answered questions. The topic was handled in an interesting man ner. Tliere was also consideration of r.ollday plans. - ill Hold Mothers' Meetino. A mothers' meeting will be held this after noon in the South Mount Tabor school house, on the Section Line road, under trie auspices or the Portland Home Train Jng Association. Mrs. R. H. Tate, of the .Mount Tabor Circle, and Mrs. J. C. La U.rra. vice-president of the Portland association, will address the meeting. It is expected that a local circle will be organized. Lecturb bt Rabbi Wise. The subject at Temple Beth Israel tonight will be The Religion of the Old Testament." The theme will be an introduction to a series of lectures on that subject set ting forth the standpoint of Reform Ju daism on the Bible narrative. Strangers are welcome at all services. The service commences tonight at & o'clock and to morrow morning at 10:30. Mrs. Monk Gets Divorce. Mrs. B. Monk has been granted a divorce from K. J. Monk, a local jeweler, on the grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment, desertion, failure to support and false, accusations. The divorce was granted by the Circuit Court of Columbia County and Mrs. Monk was restored to her maiden name, Emma McDonald. For the purpose of consulting and col laborating with the Oregon officials who have charge of the Columbia River fish eries. Governor Mead's legislative com mittee, appointed to draw up salmon laws for Washington, 'will convene In the Cornelius Hotel this morning at 10. It is expected that practically all the packers and canners interested in the Columbia River salmon question will at tend the meeting, as will Fish Warden H. C. McAllister, and other officials of this state. Among the subjects that will be brought up for discussion so that the Washington committee may recommend such legislation as will not conflict with the legislation of Oregon, will be the matter- of a closed season, regulations pertaining to fishing gear, and the ques tion of the discharge of muddy waters from irrigating ditches into, the spawn ing grounds of salmon. It is hoped to bring about similar laws in both states by the Joint meeting of the fishermen. Among those who are expected to be present are H. S. McGowan.
