10 THE "MORNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1906. RUMOR NOT HEARD Russ Hall Says Seattle Will Surely Have Ball Team. MANY PLAYERS NOW SIGNED 3Ianager of Slwaslies Discusses Sit uation During Brier Stop in Portland cn Koutc to Sound City. Russ Hal!, of Louisville. Ky the homo of "Honest" Johu McCloskey and other notables In the baseball profession, ar rived In Portland last evening on his way to Seattle, where he goes to confer with the magnates of that town on the base ball situation. Russ has no Intimation of the rumored Intention of the Seattle moguls tft withdraw from the league. In fact, he is confident pt Seattle staying by the league, which Is evidenced by the fact that the Slwash manager has already signed up his team for the coming sea son. Manager Hall recently attended the conference of the National Association of Baseball Leagues, which met in Chicago last week. According to his story the members of organized baseball effectually disposed of the ambitions of Tebeau, Stalllngf5.vGrifllths and other like mem bers, who .expected to secure control of the convention and change the baseball map of the East to suit themselves. The iiherlnfir was attended by the largest number of delegates in the history of the organization, and everything turned out satisfactorily to the advocates of honest baseball. In speaking of his trip and intentions, the Seattle manager said: "I have not heard any rumors of the Intended withdrawal of the Seattle team and do not believe they have any such Intention. Mr. Agnew requested my at tendance in Seattle to confer on plans for the coining season, and I shall prob ably accompany him to the meeting of the Pacific Coast League in San Fran cisco, which is scheduled for the latter part of this month. "I have practically signed up my team for the season and have 18 men under con tract. Of course, r don't intend taking all of these south with me on the train ing trip, and shall dispose of some of thorn before the time for reporting ar rives. I am still looking for a couple of good men. and If I secure two I have in mind, you can bet Seattle will be in the hunt for the honors from the start. I guess we will be in the league all right." Manager McCredie, of the Portland team, joined Hall at this stage, and the local man asked the visitor how he found the market in the matter of secur ing Infielders. to which the Seattle man replied: "It is the hardest problem I ever tackled. Here are the big league clubs stocked with all the way from three to a dozen extra young fellows who are in flelders of repute and you cannot beg. borrow, steal or buy one of them for love or money. The great majority of players tied up in this manner have no earthly chance of making the big leagues, for the reason that they will not be given the chance, but will be turned over to some minor league manager who is on particularly friendly terms with thr man agement of the club to which they os tensibly belong. '"This is where the Coast gets It in the neck as far as organized baseball is concerned, for the. Easterners don't care the snap of a finger as to how we fare In the matter of players out here. "Look at Pittsburg, for Instance. They have at least 45 players on their roll. In cluding regulars and the younger element they have either purchased or drafted from the minor leagues, and yet they refused absolutely to listen to any of my propositions to purchase or exchange for any of their exta talenL In a few weeKs the teams of the American Association and Eastern leagues will secure the choic est of these extra men at nominal fig tires. I reckon we have a right to kick at such in Justice, but what good does it do us. for they only give us the laugh "I saw Tim Flood in Chicago, where he went to place his case of appeal for re instatement before the ICational body but so far as I know he received no sat isfaction from them, for it is necessary for him to secure reinstatement In this leacue first. I hope the league will do something for Tim, but I doubt very much whether they will or not. for I be lieve the San Francisco members arc op posed to considering any plan suggest ing his reinstatement." "When, asked as to the names of some of his new men, Russ declined to make them public at present, for he does not wish to rush things until he finds out the situation at his home town. The Seattle manager left on the late train for the Sound metropolis. BRITT AND HURST A GOOD TEAM Fighter and Referee Delight in "Stringing" Each Other. New York Exchange. Jimmy Britt and Tim Hurst make a Kreat team. They spend hours "string ing" each other. James came down to lunch at the Hotel Somerset the other day with a long face. "What's wrong?" asked Tim. "Bad news from home." naid Jimmy. "Has she given you the mitt?' "Not so. Tim. Worse than that. I've just heard that my father's eyesight has failed suddenly." "Too had." "Yes; I got a wire from him this morn ing saying he can't see what JL am doing in New York all this time." . , "They must have putx up a new builaing Jn St. Louis and blocked the view." sug gested Hurst, without a smile. Albany Team Is Defeated. ALBANY, Or., Jan. 14. (Special.) Al bany High School basket-ball team was defeated In the Armory hall in this city last evening by the team from the High School of Independence. The game was warmly contested, ending with a score of 24 to 22 In favor of the visitors. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Jan. 14.
