Government Witness Said He Showed Him Affidavit on Which the Prosecution Is Based. SEBBNA, Mont, Aug. 9. In the trial Ct R. M. Cobban, In the United States Court, charged with eubornation of per jury, in connection with timber-land en tries', Congressman Joseph M. Dixon, of Montana, was put on the stand today to impeach the testimony of Chauncey L. Grlswold, chief witness for the Govern ment. Grlswold has testified in the trial that before he signed an affidavit, which was given to Special Agent Zovely. of the In terior Department,' and on which tho prosecution 1b based, he had submitted the affidavit to Mr. Dixon, and the latter had advised him to sign It. Mr. Dixon testified today that Griswold never told him of or showed him the affidavit, and he had given -him no advice about it. He said Grlswold had asked him to take a civil case against Cobban, and he had declined, as he was about to attend a session of the Legislature, and could not attend to the business. This conversation occurred In December, and it was the following April when the affi davit was mado. All tho evidence in the case was con cluded, today, and the defense offered to put in the record In the case of the United States againsc Clark, which has been de cided against the Government. Judge Hunt took tho offer under consideration. The case will go to the Jury Friday. Horse and Barn Burned. OREGON CITY, Or., Aug. 9. (Special.) Fire that started from sparks from a disordered flue, yesterday afternoon, burned the house and barn, together with the contents of both, at the farm of Miss Amy Johnson, near the Frultdale Stock Farm, about three miles cast of this city. The loss will amount to about 52000, with $1200 Insurance. $87.50 BUFFALO AND BETUBN $87.80. On August 14 and 15 the Groat Northern Railway will sell excursion tickets to Buffalo and return at rate of $87.50 for the round trip, tickets good going via Great Northern Railway, returning same or any direct route, stop-overs allowed on return trip, limit 60 days east of Chicago, 90 days west.
