CONGRESSMAN DENIES PART OP
GRISWOLD'S STORY.
Government Witness Said He Showed
Him Affidavit on Which the
Prosecution Is Based.
SEBBNA, Mont, Aug. 9. In the trial
Ct R. M. Cobban, In the United States
Court, charged with eubornation of per
jury, in connection with timber-land en
tries', Congressman Joseph M. Dixon, of
Montana, was put on the stand today to
impeach the testimony of Chauncey L.
Grlswold, chief witness for the Govern
ment. Grlswold has testified in the trial that
before he signed an affidavit, which was
given to Special Agent Zovely. of the In
terior Department,' and on which tho
prosecution 1b based, he had submitted the
affidavit to Mr. Dixon, and the latter had
advised him to sign It.
Mr. Dixon testified today that Griswold
never told him of or showed him the
affidavit, and he had given -him no advice
about it. He said Grlswold had asked
him to take a civil case against Cobban,
and he had declined, as he was about to
attend a session of the Legislature, and
could not attend to the business. This
conversation occurred In December, and
it was the following April when the affi
davit was mado.
All tho evidence in the case was con
cluded, today, and the defense offered to
put in the record In the case of the United
States againsc Clark, which has been de
cided against the Government. Judge
Hunt took tho offer under consideration.
The case will go to the Jury Friday.
