They have been breaking their necks down the soapy chute so long now that they are still In a Mazarine maze. They were still In that befogged state yesterday and that Is why they virtually handed Oakland that 8 to 6 game. Tom Brown, the umpire, had made a mysterious get-away and when the ban tossers lined up for action the judge of balls and strikes was nit Jerry Freeman was called Into action, and while he may have given us a bit the worst of it sev eral times, it was really mlscues by Port land's inner works that lost the game. As usual the Dugs got away in front. McCreedle's single and a free ticket to Thielman put two on the pillows waiting for Beck's two-ply wallop. They scored and Beck was nailed at third In trying to stretch the two-bagger into a triple. Cas tro's error of Schlafley's bounde: and Doc Moskiman's home run over the garden wall to right tied up the proceedings. In the fourth Inning both teams scored. Bum ball and good ball were mixed " up in the game, with both crewB endeavoring to show Just how many times they could break into the error column. They Journeyed along this way until Schlafiey alt for three cushions. Ham Zbcrg was afraid of Mo3klman, and in trying to walk him, shot one of his slow ones, which collided with the doctor's culinary department. Devereaux blngle filled the perches, and singles by Byrnes and Schmidt scored three runs. Portland came back with one in the sev enth, but in the eighth Oakland made It two. McCreedle's bad throw of Francks single in the ninth added another, mak lng the total eight. Francks error on McCreedle's ground hugger became a run when Thielman hit for tnree Backs.
