the first game today and Boston the sec
ond. The afternoon came abounded in
brilliant fielding plays. Philadelphia's
outfielders and the Boston Jnflelders di
vided the honors in the first game. Long

Please be patient with these Dugs

have been breaking their necks down the
soapy chute so long now that they are
still In a Mazarine maze. They were still
In that befogged state yesterday and that
Is why they virtually handed Oakland
that 8 to 6 game.
Tom Brown, the umpire, had made a
mysterious get-away and when the ban
tossers lined up for action the judge of
balls and strikes was nit Jerry Freeman
was called Into action, and while he may
have given us a bit the worst of it sev
eral times, it was really mlscues by Port
land's inner works that lost the game.
As usual the Dugs got away in front.
McCreedle's single and a free ticket to
Thielman put two on the pillows waiting
for Beck's two-ply wallop. They scored
and Beck was nailed at third In trying to
stretch the two-bagger into a triple. Cas
tro's error of Schlafley's bounde:
and Doc Moskiman's home run over
the garden wall to right tied up the
proceedings. In the fourth Inning both

enth, but in the eighth Oakland made It
two. McCreedle's bad throw of Francks
single in the ninth added another, mak
lng the total eight.
Francks error on McCreedle's ground
hugger became a run when Thielman hit
for tnree Backs. He scored on Beck'
long poke to right field.

Sky Pilot is So Badly Injured That
He Has to Be Shot-Two
Jockeys Are Badly
Shaken Up.
CHICAGO, June 20. The same condi
tions that governed racing Saturday pre
vailed at "Washington Park today, the
edict of Mayor Harrison against wagering
money on the results being rigidly en
forced. Nearly 200 of the city's police
men, under Assistant Chief Schuttler,
were there to sse that the ultimatum
against betting was adhered to, and in
view of this fact not a single effort was
made " by any of the 50 or more book
makers to do business. The attendance
was 2003.
On the corresponding day last year,
with the conditions at the track the same
as today, with the exception that book
malting was permitted, more than 16,000
persons paid for admission to the grounds.
The officials of the track declare that de
spite the poor attendance and the conse
quent loss of money, the meeting will
run the full 25 days, no matter how much
It will cost the "Washington Park Jockey
Club.
A bad accident occurred In the fifth
race. In which Sky Pilot broke his leg,
and was afterward shot upon order of the
horse's owner. Jockey Conley, who had
the mount, was severely Injured when
Sky Pilot fell, and was carried off the
field insensible.
Another accident happened In the last
event. As the horses were rounding the
back stretch Rough and Tumble, who was
well to the front, stumbled and fell.
Jockey -Greenfield was badly shaken up
and several Of his teeth were knocked

entry list for the Grand American handi
cap at inanimate targets Is the largest
ever booked for a similar event In the
country. There are 375 guns entered from
all parts of the United States. The weath
er today was sultry and cloudy. The guns
were on the range early practicing and
acquainting themselves with the condi
tions and surroundings. Tomorrow the
sweepstakes shooting will take placo.

HELIGOLAND. June 20. Dr. J. G,
Douglass Kerr's yawl Valdora was the
winner of the race for the Emperor Will
lam's cup, over the course from Dover to
Heligoland, which started Saturday morn
ing. The cutter NIcandra,. owned by John
Ferguson, was second; Richard H. Lee's
yawl, Wendur, third, and the Ketch Ca-
naa fourth.
The schooner Ingomar, owned by Mor
ton F. Plant, of New York, was the first
to reach the winning post, arriving here
at 2:21 o'clock this morning, upward of
two hours ahead of the cutter Clara, but
the American schooner was, scratch boat.
and bad to allow all competitors handi
caps, ranging from five to nine and one-
half hours. ,
Field Day at Monmouth.
MONMOUTH, Or., June 20. (Special.)
Field day at the State Normal School was
enjoyed by a. large crowd who witnessed
a very close and exciting game of tennis
between the team from Dallas and a team
from the State Normal. The game was
won by the State Normal team. Imme
dlately following was a game of baseball
between the Alumni, assisted by a bat
tery from Dallas, and the State Normal
team, which was won by the latter In the
score 7 to 6. It was a spirited game.
In the evening a literary programme
was given by the societies, followed by
an open-air concert and promenade In the
zrove.
Multnomahs Play Astorians.
ASTORIA. June 20. (Special.) The
baseball team, of the Multnomah' Club, of
Portland, has accepted a challenge to
play a game with the Commercial Club
sine, of this city, on the local grounds
next Saturday afternoon.

meeting heid at that time Mayor F. S.
Gunning was renominated for a third
term and reluctantly accepted. He ex
pressed himself tonight as more gratified
by the election of Mr. Seufert and the
shifting of the city's responsibilities from
his shoulders than he would have been
If re-elected.

BOISE, Idaho, June 20. Today's game
was a wretched exhibition of baseball,
winding up with a score of 17 to 9 In favor
of Spokane. Starkell went In the box for
Boise, but. gave place to Wright In the
fourth after four bits had been made off
him. The latter did not hold the hitting
down. For Spokane Hogg weakened In
the eighth and gave place to Drlnkwater.

of the Interior has approved the applica
tlon of the board of trustees of the Colura
bla University of this city to change the

Miner Falls Into Chute.
COTTAGE GROVE, Or., June 20. (Spe
cial.) Will Mathews, aged 40 years, was
found dead at the Crystal mine, Bohemia,
this morning. He had been on a drunk for
several days and the supposition Is that
he fell through one of the chutes and
thus met his doom. He was a miner by
trade.

Light rain Is falling this evening all along
the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but elsewhere in
the states wept of the Rocky Mountains clear
and pleasant weather continues.
It is much -warmer in the North Paclflc
States this evening.
The Indications are for fair weather In this
district Tuesday, except along the "Washington
coast, where light rain is possible.
The river at Portland reached a 0tage of 18.9
feet at 5 P. M. this evening. The river will
continue to rise during the next three or four
days, reaching a stage of 19.1 feet Tuesday and
19.3 feet "Wednesday.
