She (Ovcfiou tatc$nuw. tlU.'.NII KKVIKtt UY Til K VKTKKANM AT WASHINGTON ( ITY. On lnt Wednesday, nt t lie City of Washington, there was the grandest military review over had on this green earth. Nut mi great ill number, probably, but great ill soldiers representing glo rious victories won for liberty. The huIiHim-s re viewed by tlio President, all the chiefs of the Civil and Diplomatic service, Army Officers, Members of Congress, were the victorious Teternn of f i rant, Sherman, and Sheridan. Cecil eral Meade and Stuff headed the column, which was six hours in passing a given point. Twenty thousand school children were nsseinbled nt the North Capitol, and distributed boquet Mid other evidences of their affection to tho bravo defend ers. Ladies nppourod ou tho house-tops ntid waved their handkerchiefs to tho battlo, scarred oldiers. The soilod and tattered flags, triumph antly upheld on many n bloody lield, wero borne by their defenders, cheered on every side by tho masses of citizens. Tho hemes of prominent of. floors were decked with Hewers. The Capitol of the nation boro it motto In very largo Icttors t "Tho only National debt we can nover pay is the debt of gratitude wo owo to the victorious Union soldiers." Evory man to the latest generation, that loves liberty, will acknowledge himself ns owing part of that debt. Copperhead democrats can have no claim to such honor. Taken altogether, tho review was tho giidest pageant ever boheld by mortal eyes. ' Till! Daily Mail. Col. Nesniith has kindly placed t our disposal the following telegrams in relation to the Daily Mail. Tho public will ob serve, that while wo desire the 8tago Company to know its short-comings, we aro equally ntixiotts that tli y shall have tho contract nt living ratos : WAnlllNflTDN, D. I Insist upon l'ost Master (Jcnoral giving Oregon mail to present contractors unless they get contract for another year they will be compelled to haul their tock off tho route, first July. ' If they haul oil', wo shall bo without a mail. New contractors might attempt the service in ' Summer, but aro bound to fail in Winter. This mail is tho most Oregon wants, don't let it be abandoned. (Signed) J. W. NnsMtTll. San Fit an Vinci), May 10, 18115. Gearge It'. McLellan, Second Assistant Postmaster General, ll'asliington, I). C. : I am sure that if Cal ifornia Singe Company do not get tho present contract from Lincoln to Portland, the Oregon people will be without a mail. New contractors cannot possibly stock tho road at this lale day, and render acceptable sorvico. We must havo tho mail at any raio. Next year it can undoubtedly bo let nt greatly reduced rates. When you determine, advise by telegraph. (Signed) ' J. W. Nesmitii. A Vai.uaulk Citi.bn Leaving. Wo regret t announce that Col. Wm. II. Rector, with his family, left Salem last week to tnko up their resi dence in California. Mr. Rector is one of tho pioneers ol'llie 1'acific const, coming to Oregon in 1843 or 41. Ho has alwnys been actively engaged in some public enterprise, some business that looked farther than his own pocket some thing that would help his neighbors and the State as well as himself. He was ono of tho founders of the Willamette Woolen Manufactory the first, largest and most successful woolen mill on the coast) and was selected by the Company, we be lieve, to go to the Atlantic States and procure the machinery ; and wo aro told that tho whole en terprise would have failed nt one timo, had it not been for the energy and liberality of Mr. licctor. He has filled the office of Superintendent of In dian Affairs in this Stnto, and many ether posi tion of honor and trust, and in nil of them 1ms faithfully discharged his duty, lie "has done a very large amount of business, with all classes of people, and now loaves his old homo with nn un blemished reputation as a "man of his word," nn honest, upright cilizon. Oregon cannot atfe.nl to lose such men. Ho intends to build a Cotton Mill near San Francisco, and iu this as in tho woolen factory, will bo the pioneer of cotton manufactures on tho Pacific coast. Ho has our beat wishes for success. District Sciiodi.. We learn that the School Directors have extended the present School Quar ter, which expired last week, one-half of a Quar ter, or six weeks longer until time fur the Sum mer vacation making an 13 weeks term. They will then decide the length of the vacation, and arrange tho School Quarters for the next School Year, l.'njor the present management, the pri vate tuition has been reduced tins' year, from 92 75 per scholar the first Quarter, to from $1 25 to $1 &J the present Quarter. If liif same policy is continued, which we believe commends itself lo all, the school will soon become entirely free. The school is crowded to excess, 171 pupils hav ing been enrolled the present term in both De partments, with nn assistant teacher in each. We are glad the People's School is prospering. Keai.f.'s Coxrr.sxms. We publish only so much of Ileale's confession as will explain his statements about tho money, which he ndhered to till the last, turning around and saying to sher iff Headrick just a moment before swinging olT: "Sam, the money part of the confession is true there is no more money." Kettle's confession manifests throughout a bad and malicious spirit. He drugs in persons wno Knew notning oi nun, and iiaj no thing to do with him or his trial, and with whom he eould have had nothing to do. An instance of this, is the case of Mr. Wnlrail. stated by ilealo to be a preacher, and accused by him of attempt ing to ileal a horse. Mr. Walrad is nut a preach er, but an humble and consistent lavnian in the Methodist Church. Wo havo known Mr. Wai ted for years, an know him lo beau honest man and we would believe no man's statements to the contrary wo know him that well. .Mr W. is annoyed by a statement thus published in Dole's confession; but he has the satisfaction of knowin? that those w ho know him, will always defend bis good name from such base charges. Rebel (it r.tutii,i.s. The counties of San Diego and Sail lleruadino arc overrun with bands nf recession guerrillas, tho outgrowth of the Knlhti of the Columbia Star. The gang of horse thieves in this State are of the mum character, ami only lack opportunities to ' mk general war against tho property holders of tbii State. WltA THKV no it f-Ever since the rebellion the aecesh have been showing their proclivities by christening their children Davis, Lee, Stone wall, Beauregard, etc. Won't some good Peace Democrat now chris ten their next little rebel. Wilkes Booth t THB Phodite Market. The bottom has fal len oat of the California produce market. The Fmrmer aaya : "We cannot sympathise with those who have been induced to hold for larger prices. The leaann, thongh an expensive one, may prove so advantage for the future. Those w ho demand and bold for extreme rates oftimes are furred to sell at low prices. From Oregon we hare near 4.000 sacks uf Hour, which is reported to be the but to come, and from the manner in which flour is reported and offered in our market we are led to believe that article, like barley and beans, will soon form an important item of Auctioneer' sale fur account of whom it may concern. C"Kears are entertained that the Indiana will endeavor to clean out the settlers on Burnt river. They are gelling very bold and con6dont through their la: success in stealing. XJT The P. C. .Unatt has come out iu favor of t National Currency ; saving, "we hare no doubt but the true policy of the Paeifie Slates will be to abolish the specific contract Ian, and J permit the National Currency to form the basis tt trade.
