Comweata and Criticisms Based Upon tha Happenings of the Day-Uletori-cat and Nawa Note. A green grocer Is one who trusts Yj-deadbeat customers. Tho demagogue crop la never a fall 'tiro In this country. Man's mission In life Is to pay for the things woman wants. Sllk-mado gowns interest a woman more than silver-lined clouds. The man who gocB to law may bo uro that his lawyor will got Justice It is better to take a reef In tho alls than to sail the boat on a reef. Marriage, which should mnko one out of two, often results In sixes and evens. Mr. Rockefeller's troubles can bo classified as nervousness and Miss Ida Tnrbcll. You never know what you can't do until you try to undo something you havo done. Occasionally a man meets a woman and marries her, but moro often sho overtakes him. Did It ever occur to you that sum mer girls and peaches dlsuppear simultaneously? Down deep In his heart tho avcrago man Is anxious to seo somo other man get It In the neck. A woman's Idea of happiness la her ability to purchaso something the woman next door can't afford. Will tho genius that produced the corclcss apple plenso set) If ho cannot evolvo a sccdlesH blackberry? After a young man has blown In all his money on a girl she often shows her gratitude by marrying some other fellow. Tha Inventor of tho "radium clock'" which Is guaranteed to run ,000 years, might send It to us on trial for a couplo of hundred years or so. Thoro aro surfaco Indications that tho Texas oil Held Is emptying Itself Into tho Oulf of Mexico, whero even Mr. Kockefeller cannot got at It. If a woman's heart Is In tho, right placo It doesn't mako such a sight of difference to tho men whether her hat Is on straight or not, but It does to her woman friends. Mine. Pattl has been having trouble with her cook, and tho London papers aro printing columns about It Over hero such affairs aro so common that they are not oven talked about In so ciety any moro. What does It matter If tho Mor mons do permit tho dead to bo miir rlcd, romarrlcd and divorced again and again? If tho Mormons will draw the lino hero and obscrvo tho laws In ro gard to tho living, they ought to bo granted ovcry freedom In all that con cerns tho dead. An English court has handed down a decision to tho effect that ono who makes IiIh living by working nt n trade or following a profession Is not a gentleman. Wv must, theioforo, con elude that In England gentlemen aro fellowB that don't do anything. Over hero such chaps aro kicked fiom f i eight trains and chased by bulldogs. In considering what group of tho laboring classes has fared best dur ing tho year 1UOI, tho farmers of th United States must proitauiy no rniiK-t-d first Not only havo tho farmers teen as Industrious as usual but, what Is of supremo Importance, their labors havo bean fruitful of grand results, ludeed, In the west thoy have been so prosperous that tliero tho saying thli year Is that "the farmer Is king." In a recent effort of a certain lady novelist, whoso books aro to bo found In tha possession of factory girls on their way to work or In tho kitchen regions, but seldom above stairs, were discovered tho following extraordinary similes: "Tho hands of tho heroine, In an emotional moment 'burned llko those of a volcano;' tho villain's, on tho contrary, wero 'cold and clammy us those of a serpent.' " Fortunately tho class- of readers to whom these nov els appeal am not critical and do not atop to question tho phenomena of volcanoes and serpents endowed with hnmU. Thero has existed, and still extsU to somo extent, a falsa scntlmont that labor Is degrading or belittling. Tho contrary Is true. An Ideal condition of society can come only when every member of It recognizes that ho is bound to exercise whatever skill or strength or faculty he possesses to Ita full capacity, not selfishly or for the sako of gain merely, b)it for his own happiness and development and for tho benefit of all. And thero should be no restriction on anyone, either legal or social or through asso ciation, in regard to his lubor or Its fruits. If by patient application or natural endowment a man possesses mora skill than his fellow, or It ho chooses to bo moro industrious, ho Is entitled to tho full beuotlt of it The coreless apple litis at last ar rived. It Is called tlio world's great est discovery Iu horticulture und tho wonder of tho age. In color It Is red, dotted with yollow, It Is without seeds aud resembles tho seedless orange in that a "slightly hardened substance makes Its uppcarance at tha navel end." But this can bo obliter ated by culturo. Coreless apples havo been known before but the preseut specliueu Is tho first that can be prop agated In auy soil and climate whero the ordinary apple will grow. Thero re bow 2,000 coreless applo treee In eitatsnra Tliey havo been, obtained rrom Ave trees which boro tho seed less fruit It Is estimated that by 1100 thero will bo 2,000,000 of theso trees bearing fruit In tho orchards of tho world. Tho corclcss apple Is a stern rcbuko to thoso blind partisans of nature who maintain that tliero can be no Improvement upon her policy of administering affairs In this world. It Is a triumph of radicalism over con Borvatlsm. For untold centuries na ture has clung to tho prlniltlvo way of producing apples with cores Inside ot them. Tho core has always been looked upon as an essential accompani ment of tho apple. It has been n source of annoyance and often of cruol disappointment Hut it was "nature's way" and was accepted along with original sin as a necessary barrier be tween mankind nnd perfection. 1'octs might havo dreamed of corclcss ap ples, but nobody ever expected to meet them In tho world of reality. Tho cureless applo will be n gastronomic delight, but It should servo a higher purpose. It bids tho dreamers dream again and encourages tho pcrsoverlng to persevere. Again tho country has been treated to an exhibition of Mormon church customs and precepts and again tho disclosures aro allocking. Tho Inves tigations now In progress aro decidedly Illuminating as to social conditions In Utah. Tho testimony presented Is full of hints of polygamous practice?. It reeks with tho suggestion of social un cleanness. During tho preceding ses sion of Congress President Smith ad mitted that while tho "revealed" prin ciple of plural marriages had been "suspended" ho and somo of his broth er prophets had continued to llvo In polygamous relations dcsplto tho man ifesto of 1800. Tho testimony now ad duced would indlcato that their cxatn plo has been widely imitated. Tho other day a wife of ono of tho twelvo apostles testified that her husband had three wives, ono of whom ho married as recently as 1800. Two members of the faculty of lirlgham loung uni versity admitted that they had been living with plural wives in recont years. Nor is this all. It appears from the evidence that in Utah cus tom or church precept sanctions u number of practices which Inevitably tend townrd social disintegration. Tho church, it Bccms, grants divorces as well as ma rr In go permits. Thero aro marriages with tho dead as well as with tho living, marriages with proxlei, legal marrlogcs and church marriages, to say nothing of still moro Indefinite nnd confusing distinctions. Incidentally, the suggestlvo fact was brought out that part of tho "rcllgloua reading" required in Utah public Behools Includes tho biographies of prominent Mormons who aro known polygamlsts. KILLING RAILWAY WEEDS. Process Mnde Neceeaury Under Tropl cut Hun iu Kcnatlor. , Ouo of tho most dllllcult and expen sive problems that railway companies In tropical countries have to contend with Is keeping down the rank growth of tropical foliage, weeds, otc.,'along tho roadbed. In the tropical belt of Ecuador, which extends from tho foothills of the western cordlllera of tho Andes mountains to tho Pacific coast, tho humidity averages 87 per cent In win ter and until tho end of spring. Tho oxtremo humidity and tho lntcnso equatorial sun mako tills tropical belt ono vast hothouse. Tho Guayaquil & Quito railway, which crosses this dense Junglo belt, Homo sixty-odd miles In width, con nectlng Guayaquil on tho west coast wli.i Quito, tho capital, IKK) miles dis tant, nnd at 10,500 feet elevation, has solved tho weed problem In a satis factory manner by spraying tho right of way with a solution composed large ly of arsenic nnd niter. At Ilarraganotal, midway of tho tropical belt, tho company has erected a plant for preparing and distribut ing the poison, Ily means of large vats .and steam pipes the Ingredients are boiled and dissolved Into a strong solution, which, when brought to tho proper stsgo, Is drawn off Into a largo tank, constructed llko a regular rail way water tank. From this tank tho spraying car la filled, and by pipes ar ranged at the end of tho car the solu tion Is sprayed to any degree desired In tho samo manner that a city street Is sprinkled. Tho pressure to main tain an oven forco Is obtained from the air brako system on tho engine. When tho rainy season starts In tho weed killer plant begins operations. Tho first spraying Is dono thoroughly, and on this trip a tank car full will properly spray from three to four miles. Iu about ten days another spraying Is given, and this tliuo a tankful will properly spray from six to eight miles. After this trip spray ing at Intervals of thirty days proves Hiilllclent to keep down tho growth, which would otherwise clog the rails so badly In n few weeks that all traffic would bo stopped. -Now York Tribune I'rcsenoo of Mind. On ono occasion a great public din ner wub given to Isauc Hull by the town of Iloston and ho was 'asked to sit for his plcturo to Gilbert Htuurt, tho celebrated urtlst, who was a great braggart. When Hull visited the stu dio Ktunrt took great delight In enter taining him with anecdotes of his En glish success, stories of tho marquis of this and tho baroness of that, which showed how elegant was the Boclety to which ho had been accustomed. Un fortunately, In the midst of, this gran deur, Mrs. Stuiirt, who did not know that thero was a sitter, cnino In with apron on nnd her head tied up wltli somo handkerchiefs, from tho kitchen, and cried out: "Do you mean to have that leg of mutton boiled or roasted!" To which Stuart replied, with great presenco of mind, "Ask your mistress." Not Muuh to Say, Ilragg Yes, sir, I'vo decided to havo a long talk with tho boss aud tell him Just what I think. Nagg -Is It posslblo? Ilragg Why, don't you believe I've got tho nerve to tell him what I think) Nagg Oh, yes, but, If you tell bltn just what you think, how aro you go ing to have a loug UlU Philadelphia Preee.
