The new design will be pay to park on the north half (at right), meaning users purchase a ticket at the blue pay kiosk in the center of the lot. Meanwhile, monthly parking permits only will be allowed on the south half (at left). You may purchase a permit at City Administration; for details call the Parking Department at 541-386-1488, option 2. YOUNG VOICES Exploring the nation through women’s wrestling W ORSHIP D IRECTORY ASSEMBLIES OF GOD Submitted photo WRESTLERS Joanna Endow, left, Payton Rigert and Sarah Sullenger at an earlier meet this year. By PAYTON RIGERT News intern Over spring break, I went on a trip to visit colleges that offered women’s wrestling. While I was touring around Missouri and Kentucky, I learned about a tournament called Body Bar National Women’s Wrestling Tourna- ment that is in Dallas, Texas. The tournament is consid- ered one of the toughest women’s tournaments in the United States. If you place first, you earn a spot on the Junior or Cadet Internation- al Wrestling Team and sec- ond place is a spot on the Pan-American team. I knew that this was the tournament that I wanted to attend. When I came back from my college visit, I went straight to Coach Trent Kroll. I told him about my fantastic plan that we should all pack up and go to Texas for Body Bar. At first, he was- n’t sure if I was serious. I kept coming back and then suddenly, we had made to plans to go to Texas! Joanna Endow and Sarah Sullenger would also be join- ing us, along with Coach Kroll’s youngest daughter and my mom. There were no words to express my excite- ment. We took a plane, Thursday night, from Port- land, to Dallas and stepped into a thick blanket of humid weather. On Friday, our first day there, we went to the JFK Memorial Muse- um and a cattle ranch. Later that night, Joanna and Sarah weighed in for their competi- tion the next day. Stepping into a room that is just filled to the brim with women’s wrestlers is exhila- rating. In Oregon, we don’t have tour naments where over 300 women are in atten- dance. We got to talk with women wrestling in college and some Olympic athletes. It was inspiring to hear sto- ries from women who had the same experiences as us. After Joanna and Sarah wrestled, I weighed-in. I am considered a FILA Junior, which means that I was wrestling up to college fresh- man. This was a great oppor- tunity for me. I got to see how I would match up compared to colle ge athletes. The wrestling was fun and I learned a lot even though it didn’t go as well as I had hoped. The tournament wasn’t just about competing. It was really about learning more about the opportunities out there and to meet some phe- nomenal women’s wrestlers. This was the first time that the Hood River Valley Wrestling Women’s Team had traveled to such a tour- nament and it helped us to grow as wrestlers. Stepping out on the mat and wrestling women from all around the nation was an amazing opportunity for us. There is nothing better than seeing such a large group of women who love wrestling just as much as I do. All of us can’t wait for next year. ■ Payton Rigert is a junior at HRVHS and is about to com- plete a full school year as Hood River News intern, through the Summit Career Center program.
