5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2018 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Re-elect Smith to Gearhart City Council pen letter to Gearhart voters: You are the lucky ones. Your vote counts. I have owned a home in Gearhart for close to 25 years, but because I vote in Minnesota, sadly, I will not get the chance to vote for Kerry Smith for another term on our City Council. I spend long stretches of time in Gear- hart, and like to attend the City Council meet- ings. Often these meetings get heated, full of divergent, passionate opinions. Democracy in action, at its best. Kerry Smith is as fair-minded and smart as anyone I’ve known. As a council member, he asks important questions that have been criti- cal to understanding the many difficult issues facing a small town. In his first term it has been clear he’s a listener, always open to hear- ing divergent opinions on an issue. At the meetings his thoughts show he’s done his research. He digs down deep to get the full story without prejudgment. And, after weighing the ins and outs of an issue, Kerry can be depended upon to be a voice and a vote for the community good. We need Kerry on the Gearhart City Council. VICKIE ABRAHAMSON Gearhart means that for every new prisoner booked, one inmate has to be released. The main cri- teria for who is released is who will pose the least risk to the community by committing another crime. This is a problem, since 80 per- cent of the inmates are waiting to go to trial, plus 25 to 30 percent are women. I personally toured the jail to see for myself what the condition of the jail is — the stockpiling of inmates, the lack of avail- able free space, and the threat level of the overworked, short-handed guards. There is absolutely no doubt that a larger, safer jail is needed. The Port of Astoria Commission, which is elected county-wide, unanimously passed a resolution supporting the need for a new jail, and the bond issue to acquire one. I, as presi- dent, and as an individual citizen, wholeheart- edly support this effort. We now have the opportunity to get triple the number of beds, for half the cost, by utilizing the vacant former youth detention center. And the cost is only $42 a year on a property assessed at $200,000. For the safety of every man, woman, child and busi- ness, we must stop this revolving door of forced release of inmates charged with seri- ous crimes. Henry cares about our com- munity. When I attend City Commission meetings, Henry is the city commissioner who does the best job of explaining the issue before the commission. He often makes a point of slowing down the meetings to explain the issue to the public. I appreciate that. Henry also spent his lunch hour in my local classroom explaining how city government works. We even had a mock City Commission meeting. I appreciate his time and the clear explanation of city government. I hope you I will join me in voting for Henry Balensifer for mayor of Warrenton (Hammond, too). KATHLEEN ADAMS Hammond Vote ‘no’ on Measure 105 t is with some dismay I am compelled to write to urge my fellow community mem- bers to vote “no” on Measure 105. Dis- may that an effort is being made to actively increase divisiveness and discrimination within our local communities. Dismay that the effort has found enough support to carry it to the ballot. I can only write from my own perspec- tive, a perspective partially formed as my mother related to me how her grandparents had left Europe amidst a campaign in which she described officers coming in the night and taking men and boys away, never to be seen again. Proponents of the repeal describe social burdens of assisting low-income populations. Removing working members from fami- lies because of their immigration status will only create need for more assistance. Hon- oring refugee status, protecting people’s dig- nity, inalienable rights, and providing paths to legitimacy and citizenship will allow people personal determination. Detaining, holding and interning people leaves them unequivocally dependent. This cost will prove to be unproductive and harm- ful. Please support Oregon’s future and dig- nity. Vote “no” on Measure 105. CHRISTINA KETCHAM Astoria I SCHEDULE THE DAILY ASTORIAN A good organizational skills and encourages others. She is a team builder who has strong roots in this community. I have seen her use her leadership skills to the benefit of our commu- nity as she has led the Astoria Downtown His- toric District Association. She would make an excellent mayor. Dulcye Taylor has my vote. Bruce Jones is doing very well for our city as a city councilor. I would like to see him finish the last two years of the four-year term he was elected to serve. If he should become mayor, we don’t know who would get appointed to serve as his replacement on the City Council. Let’s keep Bruce on the City Council and vote in Dulcye Taylor as our next mayor.
