LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Re-elect Smith to
Gearhart City Council
pen letter to Gearhart voters: You are
the lucky ones. Your vote counts. I have
owned a home in Gearhart for close to 25
years, but because I vote in Minnesota, sadly,
I will not get the chance to vote for Kerry
Smith for another term on our City Council.
I spend long stretches of time in Gear-
hart, and like to attend the City Council meet-
ings. Often these meetings get heated, full of
divergent, passionate opinions. Democracy in
action, at its best.
Kerry Smith is as fair-minded and smart as
anyone I’ve known. As a council member, he
asks important questions that have been criti-
cal to understanding the many difficult issues
facing a small town. In his first term it has
been clear he’s a listener, always open to hear-
ing divergent opinions on an issue.
At the meetings his thoughts show he’s
done his research. He digs down deep to get
the full story without prejudgment. And, after
weighing the ins and outs of an issue, Kerry
can be depended upon to be a voice and a vote
for the community good.
We need Kerry on the Gearhart City
Council.

Gearhart
means that for every new prisoner booked,
one inmate has to be released. The main cri-
teria for who is released is who will pose the
least risk to the community by committing
another crime. This is a problem, since 80 per-
cent of the inmates are waiting to go to trial,
plus 25 to 30 percent are women.
I personally toured the jail to see for
myself what the condition of the jail is —
the stockpiling of inmates, the lack of avail-
able free space, and the threat level of the
overworked, short-handed guards. There is
absolutely no doubt that a larger, safer jail is
needed.
The Port of Astoria Commission, which is
elected county-wide, unanimously passed a
resolution supporting the need for a new jail,
and the bond issue to acquire one. I, as presi-
dent, and as an individual citizen, wholeheart-
edly support this effort.
We now have the opportunity to get
triple the number of beds, for half the cost,
by utilizing the vacant former youth detention
center. And the cost is only $42 a year on a
property assessed at $200,000. For the
safety of every man, woman, child and busi-
ness, we must stop this revolving door of
forced release of inmates charged with seri-
ous crimes.

Balensifer for
Warrenton mayor
am voting for Henry Balensifer for mayor
of Warrenton. Henry cares about our com-
munity. When I attend City Commission
meetings, Henry is the city commissioner
who does the best job of explaining the issue
before the commission. He often makes a
point of slowing down the meetings to explain
the issue to the public. I appreciate that.
Henry also spent his lunch hour in my local
classroom explaining how city government
works. We even had a mock City Commission
meeting. I appreciate his time and the clear
explanation of city government. I hope you
I
will join me in voting for Henry Balensifer for
mayor of Warrenton (Hammond, too).

Vote ‘no’ on Measure 105
t is with some dismay I am compelled to
write to urge my fellow community mem-
bers to vote “no” on Measure 105. Dis-
may that an effort is being made to actively
increase divisiveness and discrimination
within our local communities. Dismay that the
effort has found enough support to carry it to
the ballot.
I can only write from my own perspec-
tive, a perspective partially formed as my
mother related to me how her grandparents
had left Europe amidst a campaign in which
she described officers coming in the night and
taking men and boys away, never to be seen
again. Proponents of the repeal describe social
burdens of assisting low-income populations.
Removing working members from fami-
lies because of their immigration status will
only create need for more assistance. Hon-
oring refugee status, protecting people’s dig-
nity, inalienable rights, and providing paths to
legitimacy and citizenship will allow people
personal determination.
Detaining, holding and interning people
leaves them unequivocally dependent. This
cost will prove to be unproductive and harm-
ful. Please support Oregon’s future and dig-
nity. Vote “no” on Measure 105.

She is a team builder who has strong roots
in this community. I have seen her use her
leadership skills to the benefit of our commu-
nity as she has led the Astoria Downtown His-
toric District Association. She would make an
excellent mayor. Dulcye Taylor has my vote.
Bruce Jones is doing very well for our
city as a city councilor. I would like to see
him finish the last two years of the four-year
term he was elected to serve. If he should
become mayor, we don’t know who would get
appointed to serve as his replacement on the
City Council.
Let’s keep Bruce on the City Council and
vote in Dulcye Taylor as our next mayor.
